Thank you a lot for taking the time to critique this! I made a lot of mistakes on these exercises especially with line weight, like a lot on line weight, so I apologize.

Hello I’ll be handing the critique for your lesson 2 homework

Organic Arrows

These arrows are drawn with a good deal of confidence, which really helps you to capture the way they flow through space. The negative space between the zigzagging sections of the ribbon decreases as it moves further away, which is correct. The only bit of critique I want to offer is that sometimes your ribbon swells and bulges where it should not, this undermines the illusion of solidity that we want to achieve, keep in mind that the ribbon should get wider as it moves closer to the viewer in a seamless transition.

Lastly, your applications of lineweight are correct just keep working on having the additional line to overlap with the initial line

Organic Forms with contours

-I can see that you are sticking to the characteristics of simple sausages, and avoiding any unexpected selling or pinching. There is still room for improvement, you need to keep working on having both ends of the sausage to be equally sized. Remember that we can think of these forms as two spheres connected by a tube of consistent width.

  • When it comes to the contour ellipses you are doing a pretty good job thinking about the degree shifts and having them fitting snugly within the sausage, this does not carry over too well to your contour curves, here the degree shifts are much more subtle and in some cases they are not even noticeable. The important thing to keep in mind is that contour curves are a useful tool to describe how a form sits in space, but they also have the power to undermine our drawings by flattening them. Use the ghosting method to think about each mark’s purpose and how you are going to achieve it best, also try to imagine as if you were carving your pen along the surface of the form, this way yo will start to get the little bits of nuance that help describe how these forms sit in space

Texture

-On the texture analysis you are doing a pretty good job and I can see that you are being bold when drawing the cast shadows, the main thing you need to keep working on is the transition from dense to sparse, try to be more subtle and avoid any abrupt changes, this way you will achieve a more seamless transition.

-Moving on to the dissections, you are focusing more on outlines and negative space rather than the cast shadows themselves. A good example of this would be the strawberry texture, where you simply outlined the forms, which is an explicit texture rather than an implicit one. For more on the difference between these two, read this section of lesson 2 again. I'd also like to quickly direct you to thisimage which shows that when we're working with thin line-like textures if we outline and fill the shadow we will create a much more dynamic texture than simply drawing lines.

Form Intersections

-I think you are doing a pretty good job on this exercise, as your sets of forms feel solid and belong to the same 3D space. You are also pushing yourself to think about the intersections, some of them may not be entirely correct but this is not an issue as we will be revisiting this exercise in future lessons, and you can also do this exercise during your warm ups. There is still plenty of room to add more forms, try to be more bold and fill the entire page with forms.

Organic Intersections

-Finishing with the organic intersections, I think you need more time to get comfortable with these. Try to avoid drawing a big sausage and putting a lot of smaller sausages on top of it. The best strategy is to have each one of them with a consistent size. When adding a new sausage form try to think of it as a balloon filled with water and how it will bend and sag under the force of gravity. Lastly you are pushing the cast shadows far enough, but remember that they will wrap around the surface of the other forms just like the contour curves do.

I tried to make my sausages bigger which took a lot of space on the page and so I tried squeezing in a couple more but then they just got worse and smaller so I decided to try not to push it.

Okay, I can see that you are doing much better and your sausages are beginning to wrap around each other believably. This time you are not pushing your shadows far enough so keep an eye for that in the future.
