I am extremely amazed with how much I was able to learn via this challenge. Thank you Mr. Uncomforatble for this opportunity. Thank you in advanced, as well for anyone who critques or reviews my work so that I may learn from it. :)

Hello there!

I would like to give you critique on your 250 box challenge submission. This is my first critique, so I apologise if my explanations are unclear or begin to ramble.

Extension of lines

While many of your boxes correction lines extend in the correct direction, numerous boxes such as number 22 and 45 (blue lines) and 195 and 250 (red lines) have their lines extend the wrong way. You can make sure that your lines extend correctly every time by extending your lines away from the center point of the initial Y you made to construct the box.

If you didn't understand my explanation, this diagram may be helpful: https://imgur.com/iNpIubA

Diverging lines

In many of your boxes, their lines are diverging away from each other. As all boxes within the challenge are drawn in 3-point perspective, all lines must converge to vanishing points; no set of lines on each axis of the box should remain parallel or diverge. Linear perspective relies on correct converging lines to create a proper sense of form and space, so this may be something you might want to work on more.

Repeating and wobbly lines

I have noticed that you have repeated the lines on some your boxes (eg. box #209) and some lines on your boxes are wobbly. Drawabox prioritises confidence over accuracy, so no matter how incorrect a line is, it should not be repeated, as it will make the drawing messier (I have made this mistake myself when doing the 250 box challenge and I have wasted a lot of time because of it). Regarding wobbly lines, they are a sign that the mark was either not made using the shoulder or not executed with confidence. Take time to ghost/prepare your lines and once you feel you are ready to make the mark, execute it with confidence to avoid wobbling. If you make a mistake, roll with it and continue making the box to the best of your ability.

Lineweight

Almost none of your boxes have added lineweight around the silhouette of the box. Lineweight should have been added by applying a superimposed line over the silhouette of the box (draw over the silhouette of the box while still being ghosted and drawn with confidence); remember to keep the lineweight subtle, as that is what will reinforce the solidity of the form in space. It is OK If the line loses accuracy and flies off the box if it was drawn with the aforementioned steps.

You have done well in persisting with the challenge and seeing it through to completion, however I would like to propose a set of revisions to solidify your understanding of the information given in this challenge as well as correct the mistakes outlined above.

Next Steps:

For your revisions, I would like you to do 25 additional boxes, with these points in mind:

  • Extend your lines correctly by extending them out from the Y you used to make the box.

  • Make sure that each set of lines within your box converge to a vanishing point and do not diverge away from each other.

  • Take time to plan your marks and execute them with confidence, no matter the outcome.

  • Subtly apply lineweight to the silhouette of the box using the ghosting method to solidify the form.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi there, thank you SO much for your reply. I really appreciate your critques; in the revisions I really tried to take into account what you mentioned. Please let me know what you think if you are able. :)

Hello again,

Thanks for taking my feedback on board. I took a look at your revisions and there has been a massive improvement in your boxes! All your lines extend in the correct directions, your line weight makes your boxes far more solid and despite some errors in lines converging too rapidly (box #24), they are far better than the pre-revision boxes.

I will mark this challenge as complete, I wish you all the best with the rest of your studies and drawing!

Since a lot of our students want to break into working with digital painting however, I thought this course in particular would be a great start to get into the weeds with how to navigate the confusing world of layers, brushes, and more.

This course highlights programs across the full spectrum of options, ranging from the current industry standard Adobe Photoshop, to the Free-and-Open-Source darling Krita, as well as the mobile favourite, Procreate.
