Congratulations upon finishing lesson 1, Pippin! Now I'll go through your exercises and see what I can say and add :-)

Just a reminder that it's recommended to use a black 0.5 fineliner though it is okay to use ballpoint (preferably black). But for me it's totally fine if you use blue ballpoint, it doesn't seem to interfere the final results (at least for me)

LINES

Your lines are relatively good.

Superimposed lines doesn't have anything to be alerted of, it's well done as it should. Nothing to fret :)

Ghosted lines sometimes wobbles or/and arches one way or the other. If it's your shoulders not getting used to it it's probably fine and you should be able to fix it with being more mindful and doing it more in future lessons. If not, to fix arching lines try to counteract it with "arching" it the opposite way. Overall it's done right.

Ghosted Planes you don't have the earlier version of the Ghosted Planes but with Ellipses in Planes version which is fine (I'd just like to mention that). Either way, it's totally a fine result. It's good and if there's any critique I can give, it's more likely the same as above.

ELLIPSES

Ellipses are very tight, and very confidence I like it. I honestly think there's nothing much to say, but I will go through it.

Ellipses in Tables very neatly packed, it's drawn confidently and 2 - 3 times each ellipse. There are hiccups that I can choose here and there but if you keep this pace, you are going to the right direction.

Ellipses in Planes it's the same with my critique above.

Ellipses in Funnels are pretty good, what matters is that the minor axis should be cut in 2 symmetrical halves (which you nailed most of the time). Some few are slanted, try to be more mindful about that.

BOXES

Boxes are well executed.

Plotted Perspective is done neatly, its purpose is to teach you how perspective is and give you an eye for it.

Rough Perspective is supposed to throw you to the pool so you learn to respect it. You drew the width lines parallel to horizon lines and height lines perpendicular to it. No beginner mistakes :-)

Rotated Boxes 's results are quite good (better than mine at least). What's important are boxes are rotating and corners are kept close (as they are used for reference). So plus points

Organic Perspective is to introduce and teach you to learn the illusion of something far away in perspective. Nothing much to say other than you did it right.

Next Steps:

Good job, and now do the 250 Boxes Challange. It's to give you the mileage and experience working on perspective (since there's no shortcut to it, this is the only way). I'm sure you can do it. :)

Thank you so much for critiquing my work, I really needed it because honestly it's very easy to get so absorbed in what you're doing that some glaring issues don't appear to you, you know? So yeah I will try to work on the ghosted lines, I am always doing my best from working from my shoulder, but yeah I hope I haven't been screwing it up this whole time? I watched the video on how to use your arm at the beginning, and then again maybe a quarter of the way through the lesson again just to make sure I was getting it right. But yeah the pen I'm using is actually a 0.3mm fine pen, I accidently bought blue when I got it, I didn't realise haha, so I've bought a black pen since but yeah, anyway thank you so much!! this means a lot to me

You are doing it right most of the time already. So no worries, it's totally normal to go back to the tutorial and remembering. It's like asking your friend on what did you miss. Try to use the recommended pen and be conscious on your learning and what you do. That's it from me. Good luck and your welcome!

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

The Science of Deciding What You Should Draw

Right from when students hit the 50% rule early on in Lesson 0, they ask the same question - "What am I supposed to draw?"

It's not magic. We're made to think that when someone just whips off interesting things to draw, that they're gifted in a way that we are not. The problem isn't that we don't have ideas - it's that the ideas we have are so vague, they feel like nothing at all. In this course, we're going to look at how we can explore, pursue, and develop those fuzzy notions into something more concrete.
