Hi Burry,

I am not an official instructor so do take what I say with a grain of salt.

To start off, your superimposed line exercises look pretty wobbly and some have fraying on both ends which is something we are trying to avoid. We are also trying to make straight lines, the ghosting method is helpful for this but because this was the first exercise you would not know about it until the next lesson.

In the ghosted lines exercise, you have a lot less wobbling! This is good but now you want to straighten out your lines.

I will say, I struggle drawing ellipses confidently so I am not sure what to say besides parroting what uncomfortable says in his lesson. You actually draw them very accurately in the plane and tightly, but they do seem more wobbly than not. Maybe just keep practicing drawing circles in planes as an exercise.

Your ellipse tables look really good, nothing I need to say about this I think. Good job.

Your funnels look good, but your axises are a little tilted. Also, while your ellipses look aligned correctly, i think you draw too many times over it. Try to do no more than 2 while drawing over them.

For the rough perspective exercise, you are starting to wobble a bit, ghost those lines. Also, when drawing the vertical and horizontal lines in one-point perspective they will not tilt ever. so the only lines that you need to make guess work on is the lines connecting to the vanishing point.

ROTATED BOX EXERCISE: This one was a pain right? lol. This one is meant to be hard according to uncomfortable so don't worry about it too much. Your front end planes look pretty good with some misaligned lines, but I'll just say it's because of the chaotic nature of this exercise. However, your back planes are noticeably long. There is a thing called foreshortening that is talked about in the additional notes of the box exercises section. I'd take a look at that and try doing this exercise again but, I think that it beyond the scope of this section so do that only when you (or another person) says you are getting your straight lines/ghosted lines down.

CONCLUSION:

I will mark this as complete but, I want you to practice you to do the ghosted planes exercise to practice drawing your lines straighter. Ghosted lines are there to help you get clean lines and eventually give you accuracy. I will post an imgur of the things I pointed out and hopefully make it you don't have to read this wall of text more than twice haha. Good luck and happy holidays o7

Next Steps:

https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/ghostedplanes Try and make the lines as straight as possible. You wont always nail every line but that's okay, just keep practicing so your brain knows what you're trying to do.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I will make sure to practice the ghosted planes exercise and take a look at the foreshortening notes. Happy holidays to you too

hello I agree with everything Pointveteran has already mentioned. Let me try to give you some advice on how to improve:

Lines/Elipses

Issue: Lines being frayed on both sides

How to correct this: after you are finished with your ghosting make an intensional effort to pay attention to where your placing your pen, then execute your line.

Issue: wobbly lines/ellipses.

How to correct this: Make sure your drawing with your shoulder and not your arm/wrist. Before I execute a line/ellipse I always think "Okay, I am going to use my shoulder to draw this line/ellipse" Its almost become a montra at this point for me XD maybe it can help you.

Rotated Box Exercise

Issue: Its hard to tell but I think you miss counted the number of boxes on each side. In the middle section I'm counting 4 to the right and 3 to the left. Also your missing boxes in the top left and the bottom right quadrants.

How to correct this: Take a look at Uncomfortable's example https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/17/example make sure you have the proper number of boxes.

I would like you to do 1 page of the ghosted planes exercise again.

post in in this thread and I'll mark your lesson as complete.

Next Steps:

I would like you to do 1 page of the ghosted planes exercise again.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hey Burry,

I'm seeing improvement between this page and the last. I wanted to point out to you a really good line that you ghosted (the blue arrow).

https://imgur.com/a/33ifkcJ

This is exactly what you should be aiming for every time you draw a line.

  • Smooth and no hesitation

  • accurate on one side, but misses the point on the other side (accuracy improves with time)

On the other hand there are some cases where you miss you points on both sides (arrows in red)

Remember you can control you starting point. Its simply where you place you pen. Get in the habit of taking note where you place your pen before you execute.

I'm going to mark you as complete, but I would still like you to practice your lines during you warmups.

Good luck in the 250 box challenge,

JustCuteGirlzArt

Next Steps:

During warmups focus on ghosting and plane ghosting exercises .

Continue on to the 250 box challenge

Color and Light by James Gurney

Some of you may remember James Gurney's breathtaking work in the Dinotopia series. This is easily my favourite book on the topic of colour and light, and comes highly recommended by any artist worth their salt. While it speaks from the perspective of a traditional painter, the information in this book is invaluable for work in any medium.
