Yep, this one works fine. Starting with your superimposed lines these are off to a fine start. You are keeping a clearly defined starting point with all of your wavering at the opposite end. Your ghosted lines and planes turned out well. You are using the ghosting method to good effect to get confident linework with a pretty decent deal of accuracy that will get better and better with practice.

Your tables of ellipses are coming along pretty good. You are doing a good job drawing through your ellipses and focusing on consistent smooth ellipse shapes. This is carried over nicely into your ellipses in planes. It's great that you aren't overly concerned with accuracy and are instead focused on getting smooth ellipse shapes. Although accuracy is our end goal it can't really be forced and tends to come with mileage and consistent practice more than anything else. Your ellipses in funnels are having some issues with tilting off the minor axis. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/14/notaligned This is something you should always start considering when drawing your ellipses. One thing you could have done with these is start with a narrower degree ellipse in the center and then widen the degrees of the ellipses as they move outwards in the funnel. Please check the example here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/14/step3 Your ellipses are off to a great start but there's still room for improvement when it comes to accuracy so keep practicing them during your warmups.

The plotted perspective looks great, nothing to mention here. Your rough perspective exercises turned out pretty good. It's great that you are keeping up with the confident linework on these. That said I am a bit concerned with how much you are redrawing lines here and destroying your initially confident linework. You are also doing a good job extending the lines back on your boxes to check your work. As you can see some of your perspective estimations were quite off but that will become more intuitive with practice.

Your rotated box exercise was obviously a bit of a struggle. Something that really would have helped you with this exercise is to just draw one of these attempts by itself at a larger size on a piece of paper. Drawing small makes it much more difficult to deal with complex spatial problems and drawing bigger really helps alleviate that. You did a good job drawing through your boxes and keeping your gaps narrow and consistent but the real issue here is that you didn't complete any of your attempts here. I realize that this exercise might be beyond your current skill level but I'd still like you to actually try and complete an attempt before moving on. So as a revision I'd like you to try this one more time and draw it bigger as well. This time make sure you try and complete the corners to the best of your ability. I'm not expecting it to be done well but I need to see that at least an attempt has been made. Your organic perspective exercises are looking pretty good. You seem to be getting comfortable using the ghosting method and drawing from your shoulder for confident linework which is great. you are still redrawing lines on occasion but this was a big step up in overall line quality compared to your rough perspective exercise. Nice work. Your box constructions are decent for the most part but there are some wonky ones here and there so the 250 box challenge will be a great next step for you.

Overall this was a pretty solid submission that showed some nice growth with line confidence and ellipses. That said I need to see a completed attempt at the rotated box exercise before I can mark this as complete. So my recommendation would be to give this one more try and make sure you draw it bigger overall than your previous attempts. Once you get that submitted I'll take a look and you can most likely move on to the 250 box challenge.

Thanks Rob for that positive and detailed critique. I think you've made a fair assessment of what I've done so far, it's clear I have a long way to go but it's encouraging that I seem to be reasonably consistent with the basics. I'll have another crack at the rotated box exercise and send it over to you.

Thanks again,

Dom

Hi Rob, I've had another go at the rotated boxes exercise. Here's the link:

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
