I couldnt get good light even in daylight. I hope thats not a problem...Also the green lines are from the time when my fineliner failed for some reason. The green is the same pen, just green. I went over it, it is barely noticible but I wanted to telly any ways.

Please give your critique even if its not for all of the exercises!

Hello polarsnow, congratulations on submitting your homework, I will be giving my critique regarding your work

-Superimposed

A lot of lines are pretty wobbly but that's not something bad, from what I can tell, you are not ghosting these lines, try ghosting through the lines before drawing them, it should help with the wobbling and should help you be more confident in the mark marking, mind your fraying as well, as for some lines there is fraying on both ends always start from the same point before excuting your mark, over all though you did good here and with practice it should get better

-Ghosted lines

Your ghosted lines are pretty good and a step up from the superimposed lines, a lot of them are in the level 2 and 3 stage and are pretty straight, no complaints here

-Ghosted planes

This one is also good, no signs that you rush through this, a big aspect of this exercise is that it really is just a bigger version of ghosted lines exercise and so it is important to not rush through this and treat every line with care which you seem to have done since the lines are about as good as your ghosted lines

I will though recommend that while you don't really have to worry about the vertical and horizontal lines in the middle, try to let them at least hit the intersections of the diagonal lines like in the videos (from what I can tell you don't really try to aim for the intersection like in the video)

-Table of ellipses

This one is good, all the ellipses have been drawn smoothly and have also been drawn through twice which are both good since they help build confidence with drawing ellipses

over all it is all good and remember firstly draw confidently and then with accuracy

-Ellipses in planes

All good with this one, some ellipses are a bit uneven but nothing too much to suggest that you are not following instruction, just keep it up, just for some reminders the priority is a smooth even ellipses followed by the ellipse fitting snugly and touching all four sides of the plane but the first priority is smooth and even

-Funnels

All good here, judging from your output, you have strive to fullfil the purpose of the exercise which is to apply the use of a minor axis line and get more practice with ellipses, a lot of your ellipses are close or perfectly aligned with the minor axis and they have all been drawn smoothly, try though not to free hand drawing some of the arcs as they may take away from the purpose and your focus of the exercise

-plotted perspective

This one is good, you did well, there are some concerns, from what I can tell you tried redrawing some lines you made (basically you drew a line and it was in the wrong spot so you drew another one in the correct area), I recommend you avoid that since it takes away from the principle of quality that draw a box tries to instill, what ever you draw even if it is just a small line you must do so mindfully with your best and move on even if it is not good, allowing your self to redraw may build a habit of allowing yourself to draw with out much quality in mind,

your cross hatching as well could used some work try cross hatching all boxes in one side all facing the same direction it should help make the boxes more distinguishable, overall though as you keep doing this exercise you'll get used to navigating though the boxes and you did good for your first

-rough perspective

For this one I have just one concern, try to keep the center point around the middle, striving too far from the instructions provided is highly not recommended other than that try to avoid redrawing any lines, be sure to use the right tools, no revisions nessesary, and with practice you should get better, good job as well with this

-rotated boxes

This is one I believe I will have to assign you for revision but don't worry about waiting, as someone who's critiquing your work I will be available to recheck your work, just send me the links in discord to remind me or find a way to reach out to me but I will anyway try to find your work when I get the chance, now for the reasoning on why you need revision base on my assumptions and what I can tell

1) leveraging concepts of perspective - a big purpose of this exercise is making use of perspective tricks or concepts in perspective, for example as you know this exercise involves multiple box like objects circling around to form a ball, with these boxes being in close proximity to one another, with these in mind, for the edges of the boxes that are parallel outside of perspective and are close relative to the space of the paper they inhabit, ( basically the lines that are near to each other in the drawing) you can draw them perfectly parallel as the difference of the correct one and yours will be so small it wouldn't really be seen, from what I gather you have not grasp this concept (try visiting the link I will send below, the "draw a neighboring plane" section)

https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/rotatedboxes/step5

2) some edges themselves are not close to each other- again these are boxes that are suppose to right next to each other but not touching, but from what I gather this problem should be solved just by following my first reason (try visiting the link I will send below, the " mistake: not keeping things together" section)

https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/rotatedboxes/guessing

3) lots of lines are seemingly redrawn again- again not a good thing although honestly I can't tell if some are redrawings or just trying to change the line weight, if it is linewieght, try to keep it clean, remember in Draw A Box line weight is used to help distinguish things

4) some boxes not rotating a lot- for some boxes the rotation is almost unnoticeable to the point where the look like their edges are going in the same vanishing points (try visiting the link I will send below, the "Mistake: not actually rotating" section)

https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/rotatedboxes/notrotating

Other than that I suspect you might have felt impatient doing this, if that is correct remember to take your time, when I first did this, it took me hours to do it but I got faster with practice and even better quality, over all though I am mostly assigning you this for the first reason and if you can, try to solve the other issues as well, and don't feel too bad about the revision

  • organic perspective

For this one just a few things to note but no revision, firstly some of the boxes still have dramatic foreshortening on them, secondly some boxes from what I can tell are not following the flow of the increasing size, Other than that, this is good

If you have any questions feel free to ask

Next Steps:

Just reply with a link to your revsion of the rotated boxes exercise in this post and i'll go check it

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hello,

First of all thank you for critiquing my work. Secondly, I hope this isnt a really late reply as I was really busy and not only that I had to do the exercise several times! This time I really tried took my time with it and made no attempt to do line weight (yes I didnt draw them again and again). Here is the link:

This looks great, a large improvement from the original, it looks a lot cleaner and over all, from what I can tell you have cleared all the things I noted about, congratulations on this

Next Steps:

You have accomplished everything, and I belive you are ready to add all the exercises to your warm-up pool, and take on the 250 box challenge, congratulations

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
