Congratulations on completing lesson 1!

You did pretty well overall and I can see that you made some improvements by the end of the lesson. Starting with you super-imposed lines I can see a lot of good, straight ,confident looking lines. In your ghosted lines I can see some hesitation where you prioritized accuracy over creating a smooth, confident line. Just remember that the confidence of the stroke is far and away your top priority. Accuracy is something that you will improve on as you continue working through Drawabox and practice ghosting. If you are having trouble ending your lines where you want them you can try lifting your pen off of the page to end your mark rather than stopping the motion of your arm. You should still prioritize confidence over accuracy but this can help you build your consistency as you improve over time. In your planes homework I see a less hesitation overall. Just keep in mind what I've said here and you should continue to see improvement.

For your tables of ellipses you did a good job. Your ellipses are arranged neatly so that they fill the alloted space. I see very little wobbling too! You also did a pretty good job of keeping your ellipses pretty evenly shaped. In your ellipses in planes we see more of the same with your ellipses having a nice round, confident looking shape. Lastly for this section we have your funnels homework. Your ellipses here are good just like the ones in the previous assignments. The only thing I notice is that some of your ellipses are tilting along the minor axis. If you ever notice your ellipses are tilting you should turn your page until they line up correctly.

In your rough perspective homework you did a decent job of placing your boxes correctly. Your horizontal lines stay fairly parallel to your horizon and your vertical lines stay pretty perpendicular. The biggest thing that stands out here is the dip in the quality of your mark making. Keep in mind as you progress through Drawabox and begin to construct more complex forms that it is important to put in the time and focus required to execute each line correctly and to apply the ghosting method to every step of the process, as explained here. You should also frequently refer back to the instructions to ensure you are doing everything correctly and to the best of your current ability.

The rotated boxes exercise is a challenging and complex assignment. Looking at yours I can see you put in a lot of effort to do t his assignment to the best of your ability. You drew through your boxes correctly and I can see you tried to do a better job of maintaining a consistent quality to your mark making. One thing I do notice here is that your boxes are not always rotating along the minor axes as shown here.

Finally with your organic perspective boxes I can see some room for improvement with getting your sets of parallel lines to converge more consistently towards their shared vanishing points. That is something you will work on more in the next steps.

Next Steps:

Continue to the 250 Box Challenge!

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thanks a lot for your comments. All of them are really helpful and I'm actually reading them with the homework in my hands so I can check all of wht you told me. Very useful, I can already notice improvement, since I've kept doing most of those exercises as part of my daily warmup routine before starting to draw the 250 boxes which, by the time I'm writing this, are already 50... 200 more to go. Of course I'll use all your feedback for what's to come. Best regards!

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
