Lesson 3: Applying Construction to Plants
12:13 AM, Thursday March 25th 2021
please , i would really appreciate if you took your time to critique my homework.
Hi again TryingToDrawaBox, I'm gonna go over your submission.
Starting out by your arrows, you are really capturing their flow through space with really confident strokes, though you are immediately stiffening them up with line weight- Remember that line weight is supposed to be subtle, just on stroke on the area that you need to clarify an overlap and that's it. Check this demo explaining line weight, and here is an example of being subtly applied to an organic arrow.
Moving on to your leaves, this fluidity and confidence that you were able to capture on your arrows, translated pretty well to here, were you are not only showing them as solid objects, but also how they move through the space they occupy, being pushed around by the air and being manifestations of its motion.
On your branches exercise it seems like you are missing an important thing about the exercise. I'm seeing that you are extending your lines up to the half of each section (everything good up to now) but then (oh no), you are starting the next line from just a little behind where you left your first line, instead of starting from the beginning of that section! Here is explained what I mean, remember that this overlap is very important to create a more seamless and smoth transition. Other than that, some of your lines look a little stiff, try to ghost them a little more and remember that this are more organic lines. Also, try varying the degrees of your ellipses through the lenght of your branches to create a more solid illusion of depth, as shown here.
On to your plant constructions, overall it looks like you are doing a solid work on them, though there are a couple of things I wanna point out:
While you are doing a good job overall constructing your leaves details, sometimes you are doing too much zigzaging back and forth across the previous construction stage, this results in a loose relationship that thinks of the previous phases as more of suggestions, rather than building on top of them. this happened mostly on your hibiscus petals and what you can do instead is use more construction phases, like this.
Almost on the same note, in some other constructions it seems like you are doing a clean up pass on top of your previous stages, don't do this- On one side, it's never good to use line weight in large areas since it's a localized tool, and in the other side, you are just treating the previous stages as suggestions, while you should be building on top of them.
Seeing this construction of yours, it called my attention like you wanted to keep it clean and clear, now this is a good mentality, but the truth is that our constructions will get messy and all we can do to make them more clear is by applying line weight- This is a localized tool that we can use to clarify how different forms overlap and relate to each other, Here is a demo I did for another critique, explaining how you can use it.\
Now, you did a good job on this lesson and you manage to create some solid constructions, so I'm gonna go ahead and mark it as completed! Keep it up
Next Steps:
Feel free to move on to lesson 4.
Hello there , once again thankyou very much for doing critiques on three of my lessons . I'm in midst of doing lesson 4 right now . and having these critiques sort of in the same period got me overwhelmed. i was in dilemma whether to complete lesson 4 first or go back to redo some exercises . And i decided that i will go through some exercises starting from lesson 1 that i think have missed its real objectives.
The things you've warned me and things you made me realize that i was doing wrong , i've gone back and read them on links you gave. And i feel like just reading them isnt enough . So will you provide me with a list of excercises that you may think that i need to redo ( given all the list that i made mistakes on ) ? I go through it once my lesson 4 exercises are over.
And also when we talk about " daily warmup exercise " what are the things that we need to include in it ? i've been only doing exercises like couple of ghosted lines , superimposed lines , curves , ellipses exercise , and boxes sometimes.
Very grateful of your instructions
Okay, so all take in mind, you are doing good on your exercises up to this point, though what more of what you are missing is on of the more important things about this course, which is not working alone and relying on other people to give you feedback, so you can grow and develop faster.
I would suggest you just do exercises from lesson 1 and 2 for wamups, this consists on choosing one exercise that you wanna work on, it may be related with what you are working (organic arrows if you are doing plants for example) and do just 15-20 minutes of it, maybe a page, not much. I don't think you need to go back and do them after you are done with lesson 4, just try to incorporate them in your warm ups.
After you are done with lesson 4, try getting it critiqued on the #critique-exchange channel on the discord server, you need to stop working on a vacuum, the idea of this course is to get help from others in real time, you will see how it changes the game completely!
So, keep going wtih lesson 4 and then don't move until you get it critiqued, which you can get it, on the discord server! Good luck.
Thankyou . i understood it ????
and hahah i didnt even know there was such channel in the server. thanks for the information . I will participate from onwards
When it comes to technical drawing, there's no one better than Scott Robertson. I regularly use this book as a reference when eyeballing my perspective just won't cut it anymore. Need to figure out exactly how to rotate an object in 3D space? How to project a shape in perspective? Look no further.
