250 Box Challenge
9:12 AM, Wednesday August 18th 2021
252 boxes to be exact (6 boxes on each page, 42 pages)
Unfortunately still not fully satisfied with the very last boxes but hey, happy to have made it
Looking forward to comments !
Hey Lefebul. I'm glad we meet again! and its good to see your progress throughout the lessons and challenges.
I decided to check your submission and offer my insights on your work. these are the name given specifically because of their order and to represent the specific section of the boxes
Newbies - ( 1-100 boxes) 2. Intermediates - (101-200 boxes) and 3. pros - ( 201- 250 boxes)
okay lets analyze your work by breaking into three parts.
PART 1: THE PRAISES ( The job you did well in the challenge):
checking the mistakes: you did a great job by checking the boxes convergences by extending the lines aways from the viewer.by identifying where it went wrong, you did able to construct the boxes which has some good amount of convergences. ( like we can see on intermediates and pros) so hats off for that!
I can say that you are building a sense of confidence and patience in drawing your boxes by plotting down the starting and end points of the lines before executing, so thats good job!
while line weight and hatching is optional in this challenge, I'm glad to see that you are beginning to build the sense of form ( in this case box) using these tool.I can say that you prioritized confidence over perfection even while drawing those lines.so good job!
I like your way of experimenting with your boxes.you did take time to construct various types of boxes with different orientation, proportion and foreshortening throughout this challenge so thats great!
How are your lines? : your lines are awesome, they are smooth, confident and are ghosted before they are drawn so thats good job
You got some pretty decent amount of convergence on the intermediates and pros so good job on that too!.
PART 2: WHERE IT WENT SLIGHTLY OFF? ( Where you should keep an eye on) ( No worries part!)
In this part I will just point out where it went slightly off. In the coming part I will explain how to avoid them and how you can improve them. I made this part because It will make our brain to remind us where we are going wrong and it will thereby make us conscious about our mistakes while drawing those boxes.
your line work has improved throughout this challenge thats good! but still there are times where you caught up on thinking accuracy instead of executing with confidence, therefore some lines came out wobbly and bendy in the newbies section. therefore we have to treat every lines with respect even hatching and super imposed lines and ghost them before executing.because ghosting job will make our mind to think what we are doing and how this line holds a specific value in this box.
of course you had improved throughout the challenge but there are times where some of the set of lines converges at a faster rates than the others resulting in converging in pairs. this point you can definitely work on, in your warm ups.
It's completely and totally normal to have the back corner line slightly off compared to the rest. you should try and work on those as well. they have significantly improved at end of your work so nice job!
some set of lines in the boxes diverge a little instead of converging. although they are in minority, you should watch out for this next time while doing warm ups.
another thing I noticed at the end of your work is that some of the internals lines are not extended, May I know why? and sometimes you repeated the lines. remember repeating or correcting those lines are harmful for our growth.
At the end you may seem to rush, in that case feel free to take some break and ease yourself with it. you can also balance it with the 50% rule.
just a couple of notes in my opinion: at the end of this challenge, you did applied corrections with your correction pen to the internal lines of the boxes to get the Idea of how those planes will sit in 3d space. in my opinion its a fantastic job. If you are not satisfied with your boxes then remember this phrase - hey, sometimes even if we do 800 box challenge, our boxes will not be super accurate. these are the things that develops through lots of mileage under the belt and practice by working towards the goal.
lastly, I would suggest you to practice some very big boxes and extreme foreshortening boxes in your warm ups thinking the vps are very close to the boxes.because I can see some few on your work.
PART 3: THE JOB WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE OUR BOXES IN OUR WARM UPS:
You're making good progress towards understanding the concepts introduced in this challenge, below I'll be listing some things that will hopefully help you in your future attempts at these boxes.
I believe that you are understanding the concept of perspective very well. but still I will leave a note here so that you can come back at any time to review the notes:
NOTES:
related to diverging lines : according to the rule of perspective; All the parallel line in the 3D world( real world) will appear to converge to a specific VP on a 2d page. so what we can say is ,our parallel lines should always converge as a set not in pairs and they will never diverge from the VP as this will broke the rule of perspective. So next time, instead of drawing parallel lines in the boxes, mention your conscious mind that the parallel lines in the 3d world of box will always converge to a specific vp( vanishing point). these vps can either be staying inside the page ( creating more dramatic boxes)or outside of it ( creating shallow boxes) https://imgur.com/mWLlnYl
THE INNER CORNER PARADOX: In this challenge, we are estimating where our lines going to converge to a point. as we are humans, it is almost impossible to perfectly estimate where our lines will going to converge thereby resulting in an error. this error will continue to accumulate as we construct the box freely rotated in space. finally this accumulated error will be thrown to the back corner. So its pretty normal to have the inner back corner come out pretty off.
I want to take a look at this info here;https://i.imgur.com/8PqQLE0.png
In this image we can know that how each line will behave relating to the position from its neighbouring edges and the VP.So we can arrive at the conclusion that, If the distance between the internal edges and external edges gets reduce more and more they will eventually become parallel to one and another. Alternatively If the distance between the internal corner and the external grow more and more the internal line will also converge.you can also try and start from the back corner if the box is narrower.https://imgur.com/a/DHlA3Jh
these diagram can be pretty hard to understand at first, so if you don't understand it, don't get frustrated, keep reading it from time to time while practicing regularly, and it will click eventually.
if your aware of these notes, then you need to build mileage by including 1-2 boxes in your daily warm up routine. after that your boxes will get better and better and will eventually make you happy at the end. :Drelated to diverging lines : according to the rule of perspective; All the parallel line in the 3D world( real world) will appear to converge to a specific VP on a 2d page. so what we can say is ,our parallel lines should always converge as a set not in pairs and they will never diverge from the VP as this will broke the rule of perspective. So next time, instead of drawing parallel lines in the boxes, mention your conscious mind that the parallel lines in the 3d world of box will always converge to a specific vp( vanishing point). these vps can either be staying inside the page ( creating more dramatic boxes)or outside of it ( creating shallow boxes) https://imgur.com/mWLlnYl

last but not the least, don't get caught up on making accurate boxes. remember in the lesson 1? experiment with different speeds of drawing the lines to avoid some of the issues like wobbly and bendy. Always make sure to prioritize confidence over accuracy and draw from the shoulder to the best of the ability.
MY POINT OF VIEW:
we all know, this challenge was very intimidating because of constructing 250 boxes arbitrarily rotated in 3d and yet you did a great job by keeping persistent till the end with lots of effort, focus, energy and time so hats off for that.
" A BOX A DAY KEEP YOUR ISSUES AWAY"
Yes, We've come to the end of this feedback. overall, this was a solid submission Your submission reveals that you did take time to read through the lesson materials, followed the instructions and executed to your best of your ability. so that's good job!..thank you for submitting your assignment to the community I will mark this challenge as complete.
Yippee! we have completed this challenge. congratulations!. I hope this feedback helps . Have a wonderful artistic journey. keep goin
Thank you lefebul.
Next Steps:
what next?
1.feel free to move on to lesson 2
provide some time for your warm ups at the beginning of your drawing session.
having any questions related to exercises? feel free to reach us on draw a box discord server. we will learn better and faster by working together.
Thank you
Hey again!
First off, thanks again for the extensive critique :D
I was indeed having more trouble at some points focusing on confidence over accuracy, since the tiniest change in orientation could sometimes influence line convergence a whole lot and mess up the rest of the box. I’ll keep working on that ;)
You’re right about me not extending some internal lines at the end of the challenge, this happened when I noticed that they were off when checking the convergence with my ruler and decided to skip actually drawing out the extension and went straight to the correction. I think that’s mainly because I got frustrated with the remaining mistakes towards the end of the challenge (thinking that those mistakes should have disappeared by then) and got self-conscious about making them apparent. I’ll keep your advice about not repeating or correcting lines in mind.
I’ll also try to remember your point about boxes still not being entirely accurate even after box 800 to be a bit less hard on myself and just keep working on them in my warmups. Thanks for the advice regarding that, as well as the very helpful illustrations! The method of drawing the inner corners before some of the outer ones seems very interesting, I’ll definitely try it out.
Thanks a lot again for the very helpful comments and encouragements!
Have a very nice day !
thanks a ton! lefebul for your time and effort in responding to my feed back. I'm 100% sure that you will improve a ton in the future.
-making mistakes are part of the learning process, knowing our mistakes and pitfalls will definitely make us frustrated and discourage us from moving forwards. In order to fight with them we should be bold and should take risks.
set a timer for 10 or 15 minutes- know your goal , be conscious of your mistakes and fight for 10 or 15 min in warm ups. be as perfect as you can but don't expect perfection!.
ah! enough of this non draw a box related stuff.
Good luck on your future lessons. Awaiting to see your progress.
have a nice day to you as well!
This is a remarkable little pen. Technically speaking, any brush pen of reasonable quality will do, but I'm especially fond of this one. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.
Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.
