Constructing 3D drawing based on orthographic plans

I've been following along with the mouthwash orthographic demo. The approach used to construct the orthographic view makes sense, and I've been able to do it myself, but when I attempt to construct the 3D view, the forrest of lines becomes truly overwhelming. Is there any more to the demonstration, perhaps also showing the side orthographic view and the final 3D view?

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
