Expanded Drawabox?

So this is a question to you Uncomfortable. Your intentions for this course have always been clear and I believe you do a great job achieving it. Probably the best I have seen online. My question is: Do you ever intend on expanding Drawabox to include other art fundamentals? Namely, value, edges and shape. You do such a good job explaining line and spatial reasoning, I think you would do very well explaining those concepts too. Maybe this would be too much to tackle in full, but even a bit of each would be very helpful to people.

If you don't intend to expand, I am wondering if you might include a "What's Next" sections (perhaps unlocked when you finish lesson 7). I realize this could get complicated, because people have different goals, so this couldn't be canned advice. Maybe it would be a general converstion about art fundamentals and what each means. I confess that I have not finished Drawabox yet, but I have continued learning other ways, such as Proko.

I am curious about your thoughts on this.

While I am committed to updating the specific scope of information we cover currently so that we can help students develop their spatial reasoning skills as effectively as they are able, and maintaining that as well as the community going forward, it's worth mentioning that I, like the rest of you, have things I want to create. Teaching is something I kind of stumbled into, and that grew into a massive thing as a result of my compulsion to explain things - it's not what I ever set out to do as a career, and has very much been something of a wonderfully beneficial detour, but one that I hope to eventually steer into something that give me the time and freedom to work on my own projects (ideally ones where I don't have to worry too much about monetization, and where I can bring other students on as contractors where possible).

While I'm grateful that Drawabox has developed into a large community of students, and that I've been in a position to help them as I have, it takes up the vast majority of my time and leaves me very little left over to actually spend on the things that I am passionate about. I have many projects (including a 328 page, 20k subscriber web comic that I shelved at the end of 2022 in the interest of committing more time to getting our demo/video material overhaul done sooner, though in what little spare time I have been casually redrawing it for fun at a snail's pace) that I am dying to invest my time into. As it stands, I expect it will be at least a few years before I can do so in earnest, and the tricky thing about running a business like this is that I don't really get time off in the kind of chunks that allow for much of anything else. I might have a scrap here or there, or days where I simply have to decide whatever the main task was to be isn't getting done for my own mental health, but even then there are still questions to be answered, fires to be put out, and so on. Even when I travel - even when I've had to attend funerals - I have a minimum level of responsibilities that have to be kept up, and I'm pretty much constantly running on fumes. Even now, I'm expecting that there's a pretty significant likelihood I'll have to do some critiques on Christmas, I'm doing what I can to avoid that.

Once the overhaul is complete, my intent is to continue to provide official critique on Lesson 7, to continue to supervise our wonderful teaching assistants as they provide feedback for the other lessons, to engage with students on our community discord server, and to periodically make short videos that talk about the kinds of things I discuss there with students. Not lessons, but discussions of maintaining a healthy play-study balance, what is involved in using your skills to work on a project, and so forth. These will not be intended to teach, so much as to open students' eyes to other things that they might explore.

It's worth mentioning that one of the reasons I am able to explain the concepts we teach in this course in the manner that I am is that I have been doing so for over a decade, explaining it over and over in different ways to countless students, and reflecting upon my own understanding of those concepts to reverse engineer my own grasp so that they can be broken down to others. That same process would be necessary in order to explain other concepts, and it would very much be a lifelong endeavor. Instead, I prefer to leave it to other instructors who have their own specializations and areas of focus. This not only allows me to one day go back to my own passions, but while a one-stop-shop may seem like it's in the best interest of students, they ultimately will learn and grow far more from learning from many different voices.

Now there may be circumstances where the financial realities of giving all of the lesson material away for free may require that I put out more content that might step towards what you're talking about - for example, I have a tentative plan to in some form share "Uncomfortable's Approximate Knowledge of Many Things", whether it's a series of live streams whose attendance and recordings we sell in order to help cover gaps in our operational budget should that be necessary, but those would largely be opportunities for me to share what bits of things I know with students, but with the goal primarily being fundraising rather than providing students with something substantial and actionable enough to compare to what we provide now.

For what it's worth though, as far as discussing different fundamentals of art and what they are is what the second video from Lesson 0 addresses (albeit briefly), so you may want to give that one another look.

Thank you for your thorough and detailed response; The hallmark and strength of this website. I think it is ironic that the thing that makes your site so great is also the biggest burden (perhaps that's the wrong word). I am disappointed because I do think your ability to explain things at a core/beginner level is a gift and I am sure you would do great explaining other art fundamentals. I have and will continue to direct people interested in learning to draw to your site. I have been on Proko but I will check out NMA to see what they have to offer too. Thanks again.

Thank you for the kind words - and also, thank you for having supported Drawabox as much as you have. You've let a lot of credits expire, and many of them have gone towards helping cover the costs of providing feedback to those with tighter budgets.

Michael Hampton's Gesture Course

Michael Hampton is one of my favourite figure drawing teachers, specifically because of how he approaches things from a basis of structure, which as you have probably noted from Drawabox, is a big priority for me. Gesture however is the opposite of structure however - they both exist at opposite ends of a spectrum, where structure promotes solidity and structure (and can on its own result in stiffness and rigidity), gesture focuses on motion and fluidity, which can result in things that are ephemeral, not quite feeling solid and stable.

With structure and spatial reasoning in his very bones, he still provides an excellent exploration of gesture, but in a visual language in something that we here appreciate greatly, and that's not something you can find everywhere.
