I tried my best... I don't think I've improved very much but I'm just happy I managed to complete the challenge. Thank you in advance for taking the time to look at my work :)

Hi ILikeNutella, I've checked your submission.

Congratulations on completing the challenge! I disagree on what you said about not improving much, I can see that you hit more convergences by the end of the lesson and that your boxes are becoming bigger and more confident. Though, there is still room for improvement.

First of all, I'm seeing that in quite a lot of you boxes your are almost purposely trying to make your lines as parallel as possible. Now, this can be because you are really trying to make them parallel, as if they were converging into an "infinite" vanishing point, or you are just trying to make a very subtle convergence. Either way, remember that the boxes on this challenge were supposed to be made with 3 vanishing points, so you can practice an intuitive sense of convergence and perspective. So, by doing perfectly parallel lines, you are really just not learning much from this challenge (other than line quality).

In the future, try to read carefully the instructions of the different exercises, so you don't miss the purpose of them! And if you have any question like "why the hell we do 250 boxes???"(example question) just ask at the discord server, it's normal to have doubts, and people with more experience will happily help you out!

I'm noticing that you are having trouble with the back corner; check this construction method next time you are warming up with some boxes. It will give you a new perspective on the issue (pun intended).

Though, another way to improve the convergence of your lines, is to start thinking about the relationships of all the lines of a set of parallels, instead of just thinking about pairs. When doing a line, you should take into account, not only how that line is positioned in relation with the main converging lines, but also think about how is related with the other lines of the set, so you can guess more accurately. I know it sounds confusing, so check this diagram and if still doesn't click, don't worry, read it from time to time and eventually it will make sense!

Nice job applying line weight, remember though to keep it subtle, with just one super imposed line will be enough.

Lastly, always try to draw as big as you can, this will help you execute longer, confident lines, while also making that is easier for your brain to engage on spatial reasoning!

I'm gonna mark this lesson as completed! Keep it up.

Thank you so much for this detailed critique! I tried the new construction method to improve the back corner and the box was already much more accurate. The reason I made my boxes have very subtle convergence was that I read the notes about shallow foreshadowing and just associated that with a very, very far away vanishing point. For future warm-ups I will definitely include closer convergences.

Again, thanks a lot for looking through my submission :)

Regarding the convergence issue, the issue was if you were trying to do the parallel or just very subtle, so if you tell me that it was convergence, then now worries! Plus, you really try a variety of different convergences during your challenge.

Keep it up.

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
