Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
2:27 PM, Sunday January 31st 2021
so, this is my lesson 1 homework, critics are welcome.
(ignore the black marks, I just made some notes and erased later)
Hello Sargentobigode, congrats on completing lesson one.
Lines
Super Imposed Lines: These look smooth and confident and most of them are only fraying at one end, well done.
Ghosted Lines: Most of these are smooth and straight, good job. Don't worry too much about missing the second point slightly, accuracy will improve with practice.
Ghosted Planes: Good, some of your lines are overshooting the second point a bit, but it's always better to draw with confidence and worry about accuracy later, you're doing well.
Ellipses
Tables of Ellipses: You've drawn through the majority of these 2-3 times, good job. Most of these look nice and smooth. Again, accuracy will improve with practice.
Ellipses in Planes: Same comments as your tables of ellipses.
Ellipses in Funnels: Hey, good job! You did really well aligning your ellipses to the minor axis so they're evenly cut in half, and you've increased the degree as you worked outwards too. Excellent.
Boxes
Plotted Perspective: Good work. If I had to nitpick, you could have done your hatching lines more carefully, all the way accross the face of the box.
Rough Perspective: I can see you were plotting your points and using the ghosting method to good effect here, your boxes are well constructed, good work. You've done a good job extending your lines back to check your convergences too, good stuff.
Rotated Boxes: This is lovely. You did great keeping your edges close together, drew through all your boxes, and the rotation is good.
Organic Perspective: You've done well varying the size of the boxes to give a sense of depth within your scene. Overall your box constructions are pretty good but I am noticing that you are redrawing lines sometimes and that's a habit you should try and break. Try and stick with the initial line you put down even if it's slightly off.
Next Steps:
A solid homework submission, well done.
250 Box Challenge is next.
Remember to practice the lesson one exercises for your warm ups.
Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.
Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
