Straight lines that end up being an "S" shape

8:57 PM, Wednesday April 30th 2025

Hello,

I'm pretty new to drawing, never had any art class before.

Right now, I'm still at Lesson 01, Exercise "Ghosted Planes".

One thing that I'm struggling at this exercise is that I'm ending up with "S" lines, instead of straight lines.

Maybe because I'm still learning to drawn from the shoulders? idk...

Any tips on how to fix this mistake, without going slow with wonky lines?

Ultimately this is something people will be able to give you more targeted advice on when your Lesson 1 work is completed and you get feedback on it, since the work itself will help others better understand where you're running into trouble. That said, being new to drawing from your shoulder and being in the process of getting used to it can certainly cause such issues. Just focus for now on doing your best to adhere to the instructions, and don't worry too much about what you can do right now to "fix" problems beyond that.

oh ok, I'll continue the exercises then, still trying to achieve my true best at my current skill level.

Thanks for replying!

Framed Ink

Framed Ink

I'd been drawing as a hobby for a solid 10 years at least before I finally had the concept of composition explained to me by a friend.

Unlike the spatial reasoning we delve into here, where it's all about understanding the relationships between things in three dimensions, composition is all about understanding what you're drawing as it exists in two dimensions. It's about the silhouettes that are used to represent objects, without concern for what those objects are. It's all just shapes, how those shapes balance against one another, and how their arrangement encourages the viewer's eye to follow a specific path. When it comes to illustration, composition is extremely important, and coming to understand it fundamentally changed how I approached my own work.

Marcos Mateu-Mestre's Framed Ink is among the best books out there on explaining composition, and how to think through the way in which you lay out your work.

Illustration is, at its core, storytelling, and understanding composition will arm you with the tools you'll need to tell stories that occur across a span of time, within the confines of a single frame.
