Hey there DaveCheese, I'll be handling your Lesson 1 critique.

Your Super Imposed Lines are looking good, they do fray more as they get a bit longer and if they curve but that's normal and accuracy will improve over time. Your ghosted lines are looking pretty solid, you do get a tiny bit of wobbling which shows that you may be hesitating just a bit while trying to keep them accurate. Remember that accuracy will come with time so if you overshoot your intended stopping point right now it's ok, smooth straight lines are our top priority. Overall though this is a great start.

Honestly your Ellipses are the roughest part of your submission, you get quite a few pinched and squared edges which are a sign you aren't making them confidently. Remember that we ghost a few times before lowering our pen and creating every mark (or ellipse) in a single smooth confident motion. Just like with lines smooth round ellipses are top priority, accuracy will come with mileage. I'm glad to see you experimented with so many shapes and sizes though, keep that up as experimenting is really beneficial to one's understanding. I can see you tried to keep your ellipses divided equally in the funnels exercise which is great, the wobbliness of the ellipses makes it difficult for them to look solid though.

Your Rough Perspective Boxes look good, I can see that you tried to keep the horizontal lines parallel while keeping the vertical lines perpendicular to the horizon. One thing to keep in mind in future attempts is that when you extend the lines past the horizon it makes it trickier for you to read what's actually happening through all of the noise it creates. Your rotated boxes attempt is really solid, especially considering these last 2 exercises are meant to be a challenge at this point. I'm impressed with how clean you managed to keep everything, you managed some healthy rotation and kep the boxes equally spaced as well, great work! You grasped the concept of further boxes being smaller and closer boxes being larger in the organic perspective exercise which is great.

Overall this is a great start, I have no doubt you'll get more comfortable and confident in your line and ellipse making with a bit more mileage. You've shown that you have a good grasp of the concepts this lesson was trying to teach so I'm marking your lesson as complete and moving you on to the 250 Box Challenge.

Great work and good luck!

Next Steps:

Keep doing these exercises as warm ups.

Put some extra time into getting your ellipses nice and smooth.

Complete the 250 Box Challenge before moving on to Lesson 2.

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Faber Castell PITT Artist Pens

Like the Staedtlers, these also come in a set of multiple weights - the ones we use are F. One useful thing in these sets however (if you can't find the pens individually) is that some of the sets come with a brush pen (the B size). These can be helpful in filling out big black areas.

Still, I'd recommend buying these in person if you can, at a proper art supply store. They'll generally let you buy them individually, and also test them out beforehand to weed out any duds.
