Hello! I just finished the 250 boxes challenge. Would love to hear everyone's feedback/critique before moving on to lesson 2.

Honestly speaking, this challenge is... a bit boring? It supposes to be boring... right? There's a few time i have to resist the urge to draw a smiley face on a random box lol. But i do feel very proud of myself whenever i extend the lines and they converge into 1 point perfectly (which.. is not much, like... 1 every 20 box haha)

Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your 250 box challenge. but first of all congratulations!!Now let’s move on to the crit.

Linework

-Your sets of lines are very confidently drawn, which has really helped your boxes look more solid and believable. You are using the ghosting method to good effect, as you are getting smooth lines while maintaining good accuracy.

-It is nice to see that you are using hatching, but I’m noticing that as you moved through the challenge it got a little bit less tidy and also I think you may have used a thinner pen to do the hatching, remember to do all your linework with a single pen. Also you can benefit from drawing less lines, this way you can focus more on making confident lines.

-It is also great to see that you are using lineweight, but I think you may have overdone it a little bit, remember that if you end up making it too thick you will take the solidity of your forms away and turn them into graphic shapes. So you want to keep it very subtle, only add one superimposed line and draw it to the best of your ability. Take a look at the diagram here.

Box Construction

-Overall you are doing a great job applying the line extension method correctly and all of your sets of lines converge which is correct. You are doing a great job aiming at the vanishing points, this is due to the fact that you tended to draw boxes with dramatic rates of foreshortening with the vanishing point inside the page. Try to experiment with more shallow rates of foreshortening, with the VP’s far away, just remember that our sets of lines always have to converge even if it is just slightly but they will never diverge.

-Also keep an eye for lines converging in pairs as shown here, the more you practice the better you will get at this and eventually your lines will converge in sets rather than pairs, also take a look at this diagram which shows the relationships between each pair of lines and the angles the form respective to their vanishing points.

-Lastly I’d like you to experiment more with the orientations and angles of the boxes, if you have trouble imagining or visualizing them take a look at this image and use it as reference,

Experimenting is an important habit to develop as it helps us to have a better grounded understanding of the concepts that we are learning, so I hope you will continue to nurture and display this habit in the future.

Those are the main things you need to keep working on, overall you did a really nice job on this challenge so I’ll go ahead and mark it as complete.

Hello! First of all, thank you so much for taking your time!

Admittedly, i have a tendency to overdo things overtime, line weight and hatching is one of them, like you said. Though i think i did reach to a point where i realized it got too bold and try to fix it, sorta...? I want to ask if the lineweight from 200th box onwards is decent enough, or should i make it way thinner?

For the hatching, i actually use the same pen, but maybe bc i tilt it too much so it looks thin...? I actually haven't realized that until now lol so thank you for mentioning! I'll try to be more loose next time.

I also did check the links you gave, and i can see the errors more clearly now. Though, I wanna ask about the warm-up exercises, should i keep using lesson 1 homeworks as warm-ups, or draw more boxes using the same method apply in the 250 box challenge?

The boxes where you overdid the lineweight were exactly at the middle, the ones after are looking alright.

And yes you should keep doing the lesson 1 exercises along with the boxes. Remember that having your work as completed doesn't mean that you are done with the exercises, you should add them to your warm up routines to keep sharpening your skills. So you should keep revisiting the lesson 1 exercises and now you can also do your boxes. Hopefully that clears your doubt, good luck on the next lesson.
