Hello!

Congrats on finishing Lesson 1! I’ll be reviewing your submission and I hope you find my feedback helpful.

Superimposed Lines

  • Most of your lines are smooth and executed with confidence. Good job.

  • There are a few lines that wobbled/curved a bit, but it will get better as you practice.

  • Some of your superimposed lines have 2 frayed ends. You should place the pen carefully at the beginning of each line, so this does not happen.

Ghosted Lines

  • Most of your ghosted lines are straight and executed with confidence. Only a few lines curved a bit. Well done.

  • I would suggest you try ghosting longer lines when you practice this exercise.

Ghosted Planes

  • Most of your lines are smooth, straight and executed with confidence. Good job.

  • Some of the lines that bisect the plane doesn’t have a starting dot and an ending dot like this(https://imgur.com/a/qy6qUuf).

  • You should use the ghosting method and always plot your lines with a start and end dot.

Tables of Ellipse

  • You prioritized drawing smooth ellipses and executing them with confidence. You also kept your ellipses snugly next to each other and even vary them in degree, sizes, and orientation. Good job.

  • Some of them looked a bit wobbly, especially the small ones, but it will get better as you practice.

I would suggest you submit 1 more page of table of ellipses before proceeding to the next lesson since the assignment requires 2 pages of table of ellipses, and it would also be good for practice.

Ellipses in Planes

  • You prioritized drawing smooth ellipses and executing them with confidence. Most of your ellipses are also touching the borders, and you draw through them 2-3 times. Well done.

  • You can add this to your warmups to improve accuracy.

Funnels

  • Most of your ellipses are nicely aligned to the minor axis and cut the ellipses in 2 symmetrical halves. Good job.

  • Some of your ellipses are a bit wobbly and misaligned like in here(https://imgur.com/a/YPI7hPw)

  • You can add this to your warmups to get used to aligning ellipses to the minor axis since this exercise will be important for lesson 2.

Plotted Perspective

  • Your boxes have no distortions and it looked like you understand the concept of vanishing points and horizon lines. Good job.

Rough Perspective

  • You used one point perspective and your depth lines (those that are meant to converge towards the vanishing point) were converging with the horizon line. Good job.

  • Some of your lines wobble a bit, so be patient with the ghosting method and always draw from your shoulder.

Rotated Boxes

  • Your boxes’ corners are close to one another, you draw through the boxes, and they actually rotated. Well done.

Organic Perspective

  • Your boxes are freely rotated in space and gets smaller the further away it gets. Well done.

Some Reminders:

  • Keep in mind that confidence takes precedence over accuracy.

  • Be patient with the exercises. Don't rush and take your time for as long as you need if you think it will help you understand the lessons.

  • Don’t correct incorrect lines. If you draw an incorrect line, don't draw another line on top of it; instead, keep the line and move on.

  • Remember the 50% rule. Draw something for yourself as well. This course will take a long time to finish, and you might lose motivation/burn out as a result.

Next Steps:

1 page of Table of Ellipses

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

I'm glad to know its helpful.

Heres my feedback for table of ellipses:

  • Most of your ellipses are smooth and drawn from your shoulder. Well done.

  • Some of your ellipses wobble a bit, so always draw with confidence, be sure you're drawing from your shoulder, and draw through your ellipses 2-3 times.

Next Steps:

Proceed to 250 box challenge

Good luck!

Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
