I was looking for a good place to take pictures and didn't realise that the table was a little bit wet so the paper is a little wet in the first image. I hope that is ok!

Thank you and I hope whoever reads this has a pleasant rest of their day :)

Hi, nice work and a strong entry into the course! Overall, I think you've demonstrated well that you're engaging with the demands of each exercise. To make sure that you've become adept in each skill here, which is crucial for success in the remainder of the course, I wanted to assess your work and make suggestions for each task.

  • Superimposed lines

I notice fraying on both sides of the lines, as well as wobbling and wavering from the planned trajectory. At the same time, you have drawn lines that seem to have not wavered. This is rather promising, and the mistakes made are rather natural for the first time in approaching the exercise. I think it will be helpful to revisit this exercise just to focus more on some specific details, such as starting the lines at specific points to avoid fraying on both sides. I also feel you may benefit from trying other kinds of patterns, such as s-shapes.

  • Ghosted lines

I also notice wobbling and bowing here. I would merely recommend repeating a page of this while making fully sure that you hold your breath while drawing the lines, and be quick in drawing the lines from your shoulder. Try fitting more lines onto a page this time as well for the additional chances to practice experiencing the feeling of your shoulder working. Experiment with different lengths of lines as well.

  • Ghosted planes

The wobbling and bowing from previous exercises is also present here, however, I also notice that you are drawing more clearly straight lines here as well, which indicates you became more used to using your shoulder. That being said, I would still advise repeating this exercise to get used to drawing the diagonal lines before placing the center vertical and horizontal lines, as the diagonal lines will show you where the center vertical and horizontal lines can be correctly placed on the plane. At the moment, the vertical and horizontal lines are misplaced on the planes.

  • Tables of ellipses

You are drawing through, evenly executing the ellipses, and clearly making an effort to contain the ellipses within their alloted spaces. While there are ellipses that escape their alloted space, there is still a demonstration of a control of the various volume of the ellipses. I would constitute this exercise as successful, but may also suggest that you repeat this one as a warmup prior to other drawing, for the sake of improving your ability to draw the ellipses within their boundaries.

  • Ellipses in planes

You're working with some complicated and extreme angles here, and manage to serviceably execute the ellipses. That being said, I feel that your efforts would benefit from making an effort to ensure that the ellipses touch all 4 edges of the planes. I would also consider this exercise for warm-ups.

  • Funnels

Your funnels are generally fine, but I would ask that you repeat this and make sure that you align the ellipses with the central axis line. At the moment, some of the ellipses vary in angles. I would also ask that you consider keeping the ellipses within the boundaries of the funnels while drawing through them.

  • Plotted perspective

    Well done!

  • Rough perspective

Please repeat this while making sure that the horizontal and vertical lines are either parallel or horizontal. This will make a huge difference. Remember to use your shoulder as with the ghosted lines exercise.

  • Rotated boxes

Well done as well. The top boxes collapse inwards to the left with inconsistent perspective, but I still consider this a pass as rotation has been demonstrated.

  • Organic perspective

You are much better with the ghosting method here than in other exercises. The use of dramatic foreshadowing is quite effective, as well. I consider this a pass.

Next Steps:

Please perform another page of:

  • superimposed lines (making sure you start each line at the same point)

  • Ghosted lines (making sure you use your shoulder)

  • Ghosted planes (correct placements of diagonals and vertical/horizontal lines)

  • Funnels (with consistent angles of ellipses angled towards centre line)

  • Rough persepective (with vertical and horizontal lines either perfectly parallel or perpendicular

For a total of 5 pages.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Thank you so much! I'll look into doing this homework over the upcoming week to see if I can improve them.

I shall come back once I have finished these. Again thank you so much and I hope that you have a nice day :)

Glad you appreciated the feedback and good luck! Hope you have a nice day too. :)

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
