Proud I finally manage to finish listen one. It could be better I think, but learning to let things go.

Hello and congrats on completing lesson one. My name is Rob and I'm a teaching assistant for Drawabox who will be handling your lesson one critique. Starting with your superimposed lines these are off to a fine start. You are keeping a clearly defined starting point with all of your wavering at the opposite end. Your ghosted lines and planes turned out well. You are using the ghosting method to good effect to get confident linework with a pretty decent deal of accuracy that will get better and better with practice.

Your table of ellipses are having some serious issues with tangency and they feel a bit rushed in general. I'm going to highly recommend you slow down and go over some of these materials again and take a look at Scyllastew's videos where she works through these exercises in real time to give you an idea of how long some of these should be taking. https://youtube.com/scyllastew/videos That said you are doing a good job drawing through all of your ellipses which is important and something you need to keep doing but I'm still going to want you to do one more page of the table of ellipses and try and get something that looks a bit more like the example homework. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/11/example I'm not expecting this level of accuracy but I do expect your ellipses to at least somewhat be tangent to the lines you've placed. Your ellipses in planes are largely having the same issues with tangency. Once again I don't want you to slow down your stroke for the sake of accuracy but I feel that an attempt needs to at least be made to make your ellipse tangent to all 4 sides of the plane which doesn't seem to be happening to often with yours. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/12/example Your ellipses in funnels probably fared the best out of all of your ellipse exercises although you are still having some issues with keeping your ellipses tangent to one another and the sides of the funnel but I'm not going to have you redo this page as it's showing signs of improvement. Another thing you could have done with these is start with a narrower degree ellipse in the center and then widen the degrees of the ellipses as they move outwards in the funnel. Please check the example here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/13/step3 Your ellipses in general feel a bit rushed so I would like you to slow down and look at some of Syclla's videos and give the table of ellipses and ellipses in planes another shot.

The plotted perspective exercise looks fine although I do want to mention that you did not follow the directions for this homework or for the rough perspective boxes and organic perspective boxes in terms of doing the correct layout and number of exercises. All of these are supposed to be laid out with 3 exercises on one page like the example homeworks shown here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/14/example https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/15/example https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/17/example One of the biggest problems I'm noticing with your submission in general is that you didn't look very carefully at a lot of the homework requirements and seemed to rush through these pages. Part of learning to draw is taking your time and developing a sense of discipline and part of doing that is properly understanding the assignments that are given to you. In later lessons you will also receive redos on homework that does not follow directions. Your rough perspective boxes turned out okay although you have the same layout problems and you also skipped the step where you are supposed to extend the lines back on your boxes to check your work. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/15/step6 So I'd like you to do one more page with the correct layout of 3 exercises on a single page and make sure you extend the lines back on all of your boxes. Remember to take your time and make sure you check syclla's videos to get an idea of how you should be handling these homework pages.

It's great that you attempted the rotated box exercise but it's looking quite rough. It feels quite rushed and you seem to have panicked a bit and guessed at every single box besides the center one. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/guessing I would really recommend going through this lesson again and watching the video again. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/video You are not expected to be able to do this exercise correctly but you you need to show a bit more of an understanding than what I'm seeing here. Make sure you keep the gaps between your boxes narrow and consistent as this will really help with understanding the rotations a bit more. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/step5 Once again I highly recommend watching Syclla's video of this one. You did a nice job on your organic perspective boxes line confidence which is good to see. Once again though you didn't lay these out correctly with 3 exercises per page as the homework needs to be done so I'm going to want you to do one more page of these as well with the correct layout. Your box constructions definitely need work and I'm not expecting them to great currently as the mileage of doing the 250 box challenge after this lesson will help you a lot with that.

Overall my biggest issue with this submission is that multiple exercises feel a bit rushed or that you panicked a bit with the difficulty like with the rotated box exercise. So I really want you to slow down and if you feel like you are having trouble understanding something please look at that lesson section/video again and also go take a look at Syclla's videos of her doing the exercises. https://youtube.com/scyllastew/videos With that said I'd like you to do one more page of the table of elllipses, one page of the ellipses in planes, one page of the rough perspective boxes, and the rotated box exercise. Take your time with these. All I'm looking for is improvement not perfection.

Next Steps:

One Page Table of Ellipses - Focus on keeping your ellipses tangent to one another and the boundaries you set.

One Page Ellipses in Planes - Try and keep your ellipses tangent to all four sides of the plane

One Page Rough Perspective Box Exercise - Make sure this is laid out correctly with 3 exercises on a single page and make sure you extend the lines back on your boxes to check your work

One Page Rotated Box Exercise - Slow down take your time and try not to guess as much with your box placements

Okay, some of them are really diffcult so sometimes I panick with it because once I make a line I can't erase it. I'll go through and try what you recomended. Sorry if it looked like I rushed, a lot of theese extercises I kept re doing actually before this point, and thought I should just do it and submit it. Also, yeah I keep rereading the lessons, but I don't think I have the greatest reading comprhesion, I thought I got the point of it. The rotating box extercises I was really bummed out about, but I tried my best. The videos are a great resource and I will follow that along more, thank you. I will also see to it that I am submiting more apporietly in the future. Hopefully my next extercises turn out better. Thank you. On the road to improvment.

Okay, so while I am see a bit of improvement with the ellipses I still think you are running into some major issues and still not fully following directions. The table of ellipses and ellipses in planes are showing improvement in terms of accuracy but you are still having pretty large issues with tangency. You always want to try and keep your ellipses touching the boundaries you set up and also touching each other like in this example. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/11/example

Notice how the ellipses are not floating in between the lines and each other but are instead always touching the lines and each other. This is what I mean by tangent. Now you did improve this somewhat but It's still an issue in both the ellipses in planes and table of ellipses so I'd like you to do one more page of the table of ellipses as practice to try and work on keeping your ellipses tangent to both the boundaries and each other.

The rough perspective box exercise really didn't show much improvement at all and you ignored my main instruction in the critique which was to make sure you extend the lines back on your boxes to check your work. I can see that you are struggling a bit with the spatial thinking required with constructing these boxes from imagination and if you extend the lines back on your boxes you can check your work to see how off your estimations were. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/15/step6 So I'd like you to do another page of these as well and MAKE SURE you extend the lines back this time.

The rotated box exercise is clearly a case of you panicking and not following directions again. One of the biggest things that would help you with this exercise is to try and keep the lines between your boxes narrow and consistent instead of simply guessing and placing boxes anywhere you like. https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/16/guessing I'm not going to have you do this one again but I really suggest doing this exercise again after a few lessons to see if you can understand it a bit better.

So while there were improvement I still think you need a bit more time practicing some of these concepts in lesson one before moving on to the 250 box challenge. You are showing progress with your line confidence which is great but your box constructions and ellipses still need a bit of work.

Next Steps:

One Page Table of Ellipses - Try and keep your ellipses tangent to the boundaries and each other a bit more

One Page Rough Perspective Boxes - Extend the lines back on your boxes to check your work

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
