250 Box Challenge
3:44 PM, Sunday November 21st 2021
I've finally finished the 250 box challenge I hope it was worth it I'm not aiming for perfection as long as there good enough I'll be happy.
Hello again I’ll be taking a look at your box challenge.
-So starting with your linework, this is coming along pretty nicely. You are using the ghosting method to good effect, and your lines look pretty confident and straight which helped you to achieve more solid and believable boxes.
I can see that you avoided hatching any of the front faces of the boxes, I suggest that you try it, keep in mind that the hatching lines should also be drawn using the ghosting method and you should strive to be very tidy when adding the hatching.
The same goes for lineweight, try adding it to the lines that represent the silhouette of the box, the additional superimposed lines should also be ghosted and only add one as you want to keep it subtle, if you overdo it you risk turning your boxes into mere graphic forms
None of these are major mistakes, but suggestions for your future practice.
-You do a good job when extending the lines, all of them go away from the viewer, so good job in this regard.
-I think that you could benefit from trying more orientations for your boxes, you kept them with the inner corners close to each other, and in some cases they were almost collinear. If you have trouble imagining or visualizing orientations, take a look at this image and use it as reference.
-You should also experiment with more shallow rates of foreshortening, you keep your vanishing points relatively far from the boxes, you’ll get the most out of the challenges by experimenting more.
-You clearly didn’t have much trouble with diverging lines, most of your sets of lines converge, although I can see a few cases where your sets of lines seem to be parallel, keep in mind that due to perspective our sets of lines will never be diverging or be parallel.
-Finally keep an eye out for lines converging in pairs as shown here, as you keep practicing you will get better at having your sets of lines converging to a clearly defined vanishing point.
Overall while you did make a few mistakes your boxes are improving so far and with more mileage you'll continue to become more consistent. That being said I'll be marking your submission as complete.
Next Steps:
You can move on and good luck.
These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
