Woah! your boxes are going great. keep up the good work.

hI there, I'm chiran and I'm here for your submission to review.and I'll try my best to provide some helpful analysis on your work.

these are the name given specifically because of their order and to represent the specific section of the boxes

Newbies - ( 1-100 boxes) 2. Intermediates - (101-200 boxes) and 3. pros - ( 201- 250 boxes)

lets breakdown the challenge into three parts and analyze one by one.

PART 1: THE PRAISES ( The job you did well in the challenge):

  • As always First , I would like to say that you did a great job for checking your mistakes by extending the 3 sets of lines away from the viewer.Because of identifying your mistakes, your intermediates and pros boxes are looking great!.

o while line weight and hatching are optional in this challenge, I'm glad to see that you are beginning to build the sense of form ( in this case box) using these tools.I can say that you prioritized confidence over perfection even while drawing those lines.so good job!

I'm glad that you did take time to construct various types of boxes with different orientation, proportion and foreshortening throughout this challenge without any similar orientation or same type of boxes

  • I can say that you are building a sense of confidence and patience in drawing your boxes by plotting down the starting and end points of the lines before executing, so thats good job

  • You got some pretty decent amount of convergence on the intermediates and pros so good job on that too!.

PART 2: WHERE IT WENT SLIGHTLY OFF? ( Where you should keep an eye on) ( No worries part!)

I think you are headed in the right direction and you have understood the concept of perspective very well so the box challenge has done its job.but there are some hiccups in your work that needs to be identified and removed.

so these are some points you can try and remind yourself during warm ups in order to improve these exercises in the future. In this part I will just point out where it went off. In the coming part I will explain how to avoid them and how you can improve them.I made this part because It will make our brain to remind us where we are going wrong and it will thereby make us conscious about our mistakes while drawing.

  1. the main issue I noticed in the challenge was that hesistant, wobbly lines. Your boxes are great bu sometimes you did seem to prioritize accuracy over confidence resulting in a wobbly and bendy lines.

  2. there are times where you sometimes repeat your lines or even correct them ( even also on the internal lines of the boxes ) which makes some the boxes look messier than the other. Always remember repeating the lines ( correcting your lines ) is a mistake and when you find yourself in a situation where you tend to correct your lines path, just don’t do it and try to move on thinking it is correct. Therefore in the next time you will not make the similar mistakes.

  3. from now on when you want to add line weight to the boxes. Remember to add to the silhouette of the boxes ( like external edges of the box not the internal lines) even though while drawing those lines you should always prioritize confidence than the perfection.

  4. just a reminder here : always treat every lines you draw with respect even hatching and super imposed lines. How do we treat with respect?- first we should plan where our lines will start and end by plotting the points and ghost them several times ( hovering in motion) and draw them with confidence and from the shoulder.

  5. of course you had improved throughout the challenge but there are times where some of the set of lines converges at a faster rates than the others resulting in converging in pairs. yep this issue you can definitely work on, in your warm ups. by trying to know the relationships between each lines related to its distance.

  6. It would have been better and helpful to us,if you had constructed some bigger boxes and some extreme foreshortening boxes in the challenge. the shallow boxes are very important for the upcoming exercises and even extreme dramatic foreshortening boxes are also important too ,when we want to convey fish eye perspective in our scene. so i would encourage you to practice both the types as well.

  7. It's completely and totally normal to have the back corner line slightly off compared to the rest.they have significantly improved at end of your work so nice job!.

In this part I'm not fussing over it and I'm not even expecting perfectionism but I'm just pointing out where it went slightly off so that you can next incorporate these points to improve your work.

PART 3: THE JOB WE CAN DO TO IMPROVE OUR BOXES IN OUR WARM UPS:

First thing first, we should always prioritize confidence even when we have to sacrifice some accuary and always continue to ghost and drawn from the shoulder.

You're making good progress towards understanding the concepts introduced in this challenge, below I'll be listing some things that will hopefully help you in your future attempts at these boxes.

o..How to Reduce wobbly, arches and s curves issues in our line work:

o..Wobbly lines are the result of slow and hesitant in execution. https://d15v304a6xpq4b.cloudfront.net/lesson_images/5bcda336.jpg

o..Subtle S curves and arches in your lines are the results of course correcting your lines.

What is course correcting? Well course correction are the correction where your subconscious brain will correct your line path when they are off, to reach the end point. You can think the lines as a space craft (When a spacecraft gets off of its trajectory, or path through space, it must be put back on the right path.) so our brain will do some mischiefs making the lines that arch and curves in the path.

o..One answer I can give to reduce the wobbly, arches and s curves issues is: trying out variety in your speed of drawing your lines

o..this point is always mentioned in every feedback, why? because to get you improving...Speed of execution: when to increase the speed of drawing the lines and when to slow down?

o..If the lines came out dark, wobbly, contains subtle S curve and undershooted then increasing the speed of drawing your lines can reduce these issues. however if the lines are overshooting more and the flow of ink in your pen is inconsistent then its advisable to reduce the speed and try to lift the pen off the page when reaching the end dot.

o..feel free to experiment with different speed of drawing your lines from point A to point B during your warm up session and opt for the smooth and consistent ones. Increasing the speed of execution can really help in reducing wobbly lines. And it can also help in reducing the course correction of your lines too!.

I believe that you are understanding the concept of perspective very well. and you have developed better spatial ability than the previous exercises, but still I will leave a note here so that you can come back at any time to review the notes:

NOTES:

RELATING TO DIVERGENCE LINE : according to the rule of perspective; All the parallel line in the 3D world( real world) will appear to converge to a specific VP on a 2d page. so what we can say is ,our parallel lines should always converge as a set not in pairs and they will never diverge from the VP as this will broke the rule of perspective. So next time, instead of drawing parallel lines in the boxes, mention your conscious mind that the parallel lines in the 3d world of box will always converge to a specific vp( vanishing point). these vps can either be staying inside the page ( creating more dramatic boxes)or outside of it ( creating shallow boxes) https://imgur.com/mWLlnYl

THE INNER CORNER PARADOX: In this challenge, we are estimating where our lines going to converge to a point. as we are humans, it is almost impossible to perfectly estimate where our lines will going to converge thereby resulting in an error. this error will continue to accumulate as we construct the box freely rotated in space. finally this accumulated error will be thrown to the back corner. So its pretty normal to have the inner back corner come out pretty off.

I want to take a look at this info here;https://i.imgur.com/8PqQLE0.png

o..In this image we can know that how each line will behave relating to the position from its neighbouring edges and the VP.So we can arrive at the conclusion that, If the distance between the internal edges and external edges gets reduce more and more they will eventually become parallel to one and another. Alternatively If the distance between the internal corner and the external grow more and more the internal line will also converge.

o..you can also try and start from the back corner if the box is narrower.https://imgur.com/a/DHlA3Jh

o..these diagram can be pretty hard to understand at first, so if you don't understand it, don't get frustrated, keep reading it from time to time while practicing regularly, and it will click eventually.

o..if your aware of these notes, then you need to build mileage by including 1-2 boxes in your daily warm up routine. after that your boxes will get better and better and will eventually make you happy at the end. :D

o..Now coming to the important point of this feedback:

o..I know, this challenge was super hard and trickier to complete yet you did a solid job completing this challenge but I feel like you still have to improve in your line work and I want to bring you to the right track so unfortunately I’m asking for a revision.

The REVISION: WHAT ARE YOUR REVISIONS ?

15 boxes that’s all- 5 box per page

How should your revision look like?

1.Like I said every lines should be treat with respect and drawn with care leaving accuracy behind and prioritizing confidence first. Here I don’t care about how accurate you are, I only care about how confident you are in executing your lines.

  1. Make sure to apply line weight to the boxes silhoutte ( body).even while adding line weight to the box always you have to prioritize confidence over accuracy and execute your best from your shoulder.

I know its very daunting to construct boxes overall only 15 boxes I'm asking for

Include bigger boxes and both shallow and dramatic boxes in the revisions if you like.

I get that, I get that, there is lots of info to grasp at a single time. Its pretty hard to understand at a single shot. So take your time to understand the materials given there and execute to your best of the ability striving towards that goal.there is a difference between one who strive towards the goal and one who not so yeah,

Take as much time as you need to construct these boxes and also there is no deadline.

The point of this revision is not to expect perfection of exercise but to help you to remind what you should be aiming for throughout this course. and also to help you develop some confidence and patience throughout. because these are the preliminary requirements in the coming exercises;

Thank you for reading it thru and I hope you take my feedback to heart and submit your revision.

I awaiting response from your side. Have a great day.

Thank you.

Next Steps:

  1. 15 boxes 5 per page concentrating on your line work.
When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

you got kind of sloppy with the line work at the end, but the vanishing points got more consistent at the end also. I think your downward parallel lines were your biggest problem although they did get much better at the end.

Thank you for the critique!

yeah I noticed it aswell after I took the photos, that later boxes look sloppier.

I agree with the downward parallel lines especially with the back corners.

I'm glad that my vanshing points got better.

I myself feel that my line weight was very wobbly between boxes either too thin or too thick, with too many times me trying to overcorret lines that felt off and resulting in thicker lines with offshoots.

Glad I could help.

Yeah, I had the same problem with adding line weight to my boxes, many many offshoots.
