I'm sorry the rotated boxes looks like Satan's haemorrhoids. I tried my best.

Nice work finishing Lesson 1! Here are my thoughts on your work.

Superimposed Lines

- These look great! They only fray on one end and it is clear that you are drawing each stroke with confidence

- I would suggest trying to do some different line lengths or shapes in the future as warm-ups

Ghosted Lines

- good overall, a little wobble like in line 5 and arch like in line 17/10/15

- try making sure you're drawing from the shoulder, or conciously trying to arch the opposite way may help

Ghosted Planes

- lines a little wobbly again, but definitely improve by the second page of planes

- the wobbliness will improve with more practice or the tips mentioned previously

- it helps me to take a deep breath before a line if i'm feeling unconfident

Tables of Ellipses

 - these are pretty good!

 - it looks like you may be prioritizing accuracy over confidence somewhat, remember that confidence is alway the most important thing in drawabox, and it's okay if your ellipses you outside of the box or arent the exact same shape if they are drawn confidently, accuracy will come as you build that muscle memory

Ellipses in Planes

- there's still a little wobbliness, but the ellipses are looking smoother on the second page

- your lines have also improved a lot, very impressive!

Ellipses in Funnels

- same comments as tables of ellipses

- your minor axis is good, each ellipse is perfectly split in half

- there is a little tilt in one of the funnels but the rest are good

Plotted Perspective

- Beautiful! And nice shading

- but remember we were supposed to draw the lines back to the vanishing points since the purpose of this exercise was to see how boxes behave with shared vanishing points, it won't be as pretty but that's not the purpose of this exercise so it's okay

Rough Perspective

- These are nice! Your lines do get a little wobbly again so remember to take breaks!

Rotated Boxes

-great!

Organic Perspective

- pretty good

- just remember to use the ghosting method and confidence when adding line weight

Next Steps:

A good next move would be the 250 box challenge to keep working on your lines and perspective.

oops I didn't see that someone already replied, my bad!

Technically speaking, Paradoxer did not write a critique. Without marking the work as complete and offering a next step the entire community can agree with that comment but it won't count as a completed lesson. So you keep writing those critiques and help your fellow artist collect their shiny badges!

Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to leave feedback!

I've put sticky notes with your tips on the relevant pages to remind myself what to focus on.

I definitely need to keep practicing, I'll be using these exercises as warm ups for sure.

Really helpful, thank you so much!

I only just finished lesson 1 myself, so please take this with a grain of salt.

Initial impression: wow! Your lines are very straight and very accurate. And your drawing through is very tight too.

Some of your ellipses look a bit egg shaped, with one end tighter than the other. Overall very nice though.

I really like the shading on the plotted perspective exercises. I also like how you did big-little-big on one of hte organic perspective ones - creative. I got a nice sense of depth from all of them.

Some of the lines on the rough perspective are a bit wobbly, same with organic perspective. I found myself having to catch myself from drawing with my wrist on the smaller ones, so maybe it's that?

Can't wait to see what you do next! Honestly I learned a ton from looking through this, so thank you for sharing.

Thank you very much for taking the time to leave feedback, I really appreciate it.

I definitley have problems with my freehand lines getting wobbly. Partially this is the bad habit of drawing with my wrist creeping in with the very short lines, and partly from me thinking about too much all at once. Thinking about the next three lines and the overall picture, instead of focussing on the line I'm actually drawing right now.

I was able to focus clearly on the straight lines for the ghosted planes, but the 3d stuff kinda cooked my brain. Definitely need more practice!

Thanks for the tip on the ellipses, I'll need to work on those too.

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
