Blood Beetle

Neither an animal nor a plant, but a mix between the two, such is the nature of the Blood Beetle. This peculiar organism poses quite the threat despite its size and it's a fearsome predator. It attracts potential prey by emitting a pleasant aroma, and when the unsuspecting victim approaches, it expels a soporific pollen that will leave the prey vulnerable to attack. Then, the blood beetle will feast on the blood of the victim, though it will generally not kill, as its prey tends to be much bigger than itself.

However, should the beetle decide to lay its eggs in the victim, the latter will not live for much longer. The eggs are burrowed in the prey's skin and will grow there for approximately one week and then begin to grow roots, which will consume the victim's nutrients until they are completely dry. Meanwhile, the eggs grow into a sort of crhysallis where the larva will develop. When the larva is fully grown, it will sprout its characteristic red flower, which will protrude out of the animal's skin. With its aroma it will attempt to attract its first prey, so that the larva can have nutrients right after "hatching". The hatchlings' size will depend on amount of nutrients the eggs managed to absorb during the growing process.

Below this point is mostly ads. Indie projects, and tool/course recommendations from us.
This section is reserved for low-cost advertising space for art related indie projects.
With how saturated the market is, it is tough for such projects to get eyes on their work.
By providing this section, we hope to help with that.
If you'd like to advertise here, you can do so through comicad.net
The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something we've used ourselves, or know to be of impeccable quality. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Michael Hampton's Gesture Course

Michael Hampton's Gesture Course

Michael Hampton is one of my favourite figure drawing teachers, specifically because of how he approaches things from a basis of structure, which as you have probably noted from Drawabox, is a big priority for me. Gesture however is the opposite of structure however - they both exist at opposite ends of a spectrum, where structure promotes solidity and structure (and can on its own result in stiffness and rigidity), gesture focuses on motion and fluidity, which can result in things that are ephemeral, not quite feeling solid and stable.

With structure and spatial reasoning in his very bones, he still provides an excellent exploration of gesture, but in a visual language in something that we here appreciate greatly, and that's not something you can find everywhere.
