2 warmup questions

  1. about the superimposed lines can i do more than 8 lines in my warmups like 10? 10 sound best to me

  2. do i really have to do it first in my drawing routine or can i do it in some time when im drawing

Hey!

Ok, so first question first: Of course you can! Do what feels best for you! Maybe when doing this superimposed lines - homework 8 is required and I would also do 8, but in your the warm up is for you. Just think about it, the warm ups purpose is, that YOU are ready to do other stuff. So whatever makes YOU feel comfortable, you should do!

To the second question: I think it's best to do the warm up before. It is there to get your mind/hands used to the idea that you draw now. (Like in sports, you would do the warm up before, not inbetween.)

Also you could think about it like this: If you do the warm up before, you get a warm up AND you practice it. But if you do it in between it is just a practice of superimposed lines and not a warm up anymore (If that makes sense haha, it makes sense in my head, I don't know if I can write what I want to say lol.)

  1. I see no harm in doing more lines, just make sure you're not overworking yourself. This is only a warmup so don't tire yourself too much during it.

  2. Ideally, yes, warm up first. Think of it as a pre-workout routine. You always warm up before lifting some weight or entering a sparring match. Warmimg up will help your arm loose and your lines become more fluid.

Michael Hampton is one of my favourite figure drawing teachers, specifically because of how he approaches things from a basis of structure, which as you have probably noted from Drawabox, is a big priority for me. Gesture however is the opposite of structure however - they both exist at opposite ends of a spectrum, where structure promotes solidity and structure (and can on its own result in stiffness and rigidity), gesture focuses on motion and fluidity, which can result in things that are ephemeral, not quite feeling solid and stable.

With structure and spatial reasoning in his very bones, he still provides an excellent exploration of gesture, but in a visual language in something that we here appreciate greatly, and that's not something you can find everywhere.
