whether or not my cylinders came out any good, I must say that I felt more fulfilled and satisfied with completing this challenge than I did graduating this year in uni.

Hahaha I don’t know what to think about that, as I am about to enter uni myself, anyways, I’ll be handling the critique for your 250 Cylinder Challenge.

-Starting with the cylinders around an arbitrary minor axis, I like to see that you have drawn all of your ellipse with confidence, and the same goes for the side edges of the cylinder, which means that you are using the ghosting method to good effect.

I can see that you have spent a good amount of time checking for the minor axis of your ellipses, and you caught even the slightest of misalignments, although there are plenty of instances where you were quite off from hitting the mark.

We use these corrections to change our approach and get more consistent and better results. I do notice some improvement on your set but there are still plenty of instances where your ellipses were tilted and pretty far off from being correctly aligned.

If you find your ellipses constantly tilting off to one side then try to compensate for it by tilting them in the opposite direction, and focus more on the planning phase of the ghostin method, I am sure that you will continue to improve with more mileage and practice.

-Now I want to talk about the important thing that we are meant to learn in this part of the challenge, and that is the relationship between the rate of foreshortening and the degree shift from the top to the bottom ellipse. These two things cannot work independently of each other, which means that if we have a dramatic rate of foreshortening it should be accompanied by a dramatic shift in the degree of the ellipses, with the ellipse furthest away being much wider in comparison to the ellipse at the front.

These two things tell us important information about the same cylinder, that’s why they cannot contradict each other.

Looking at your set of cylinders I can see that you achieved to maintain this relationship, whether consciously or unconsciously.

-Moving on to the cylinders in boxes, the bulk of your work is very well done.

This exercise is all about building an intuitive sense for how to build boxes which feature two opposite sides that are proportionally a square in 3D space, regardless of its orientation in space. We do not do this by memorizing every single combination, but by continuous repetition and analysis by way of the line extensions.

On the box challenge the line extensions served to helped us to develop a strong sense for how to achieve more consistent convergences of our sets of lines, here we are adding 3 more lines, two for the contact points of each ellipse and one for the minor axis of each ellipse. In checking how far off these are from converging towards the box's own vanishing points, we can see how far off we were from having the ellipse represent a circle in 3D space, and in turn how far off we were from having the plane that encloses it from representing a square.

-However I noticed that you made a blunder, you checked the for the contact points of each ellipse but you did not check for the minor axis, each one of these extensions is important and the fact that you did extend the corrections for the minor axis of each ellipse means that you lost important information.

-I also want to remind you that you should not worry too much about having each ellipse to touch the four sides of the plane, this comes back all the way to lesson 1 ellipses in planes exercise. Instead your first priority should be to align to your minor axis correctly, and drawing symmetrical and even ellipses even if they don’t touch the four sides of the plane. We can do this because these mistakes do not take away from the things we learn by completing the challenge all the way to the end.

Okay because of this I’ll have you do some additional homework, but I can tell you right now that you are already moving in the right direction but I do want you to extend the minor axis of each ellipse all the way through, I want you to read the instructions for the cylinders in boxes again.

Next Steps:

Please do the following

-15 Cylinders in Boxes, (make sure to check for the minor axis of each ellipse)

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hey Beckerito, I've finished the 15 cylinders in boxes that you requested, I hope the correction lines are all visible, the ink of a coloured pen was starting to finish. Here is the link: https://imgur.com/a/dFGEYJJ

I added the correction for the minor axis. Somehow (I don't know why) I had previously thought that I had to abandon that correction method ( I must have misread the page).

Anyhow about university, don't worry too much, I'm sure your experience will be different. Covid messed up mine big time, so even during graduation day, I had to stay at home due to covid restrictions (It felt a bit underwhelming ahah).

I hope and wish you to have a fun and constructive experience in uni! be steadfast with exams and all good luck to you!

Okayy, so aside from the things already mentioned in the critique I have few things to say. There is only one thing I want to suggest, now that you are making sure to check for the minor axis extend it all the way through to see if it converges with the other lines. Aside from that I think you are prepared to move on to lesson 6, so I'll mark this lesson as complete. And thanks a lot for the kind words!!

Next Steps:

Lesson 6

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
