Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your lesson 2 homework

-Starting with the arrows section, you have done a good job with the foreshortening and the negative space between the zigzagging sections of the ribbon, you hesitate sometimes which undermines the solidity and fluidity of your arrows.

Remember to add lineweight only to the overlapping sections, when adding the superimposed line do it calmly and in a controlled motion. If you do it fast your line will tend to look more straight rather than curved.

-Moving on to the organic forms with contours, I’m pleased to see that you have sticked to the characteristics of simple sausages, and avoided any pinching or swelling throughout the form. You should aim to keep improving and practicing as there is always room for improvement.

  • I think you need more time to consider the alignment and degree shifts of your ellipses, take your time to ghost your ellipses and draw them to the best of your ability.

  • You should take more time to ghost your contour curves and think about how they wrap around the surface they are sitting on. Prioritize drawing confident and smooth lines, so the solidity of your form is not undermined by any wobbliness.

You could also benefit from using less contours, it is a useful tool, but you don’t want to rely too heavily on it, so consider what the purpose of each mark is and how it can accomplish it best.

-Moving on to the texture analysis, try to avoid drawing textures with lines, think about the form casting the shadow and the surface it falls on, do not draw any outlines.

-Your work in the dissections is good, I can see that you are focusing more on cast shadows here, the styrofoam texture is a pretty good example of what you should always strive to do, here you didn’t draw any outlines and implied the presence of the shapes implicitly.

Finally I want to quickly redirect you to this image which shows that when we're working with thin line like textures if we outline and fill the shadow we will create a much more dynamic texture than simply drawing lines.

-Your work in the form intersections is coming along nicely, I can see that your sense of 3d is clearly developing as all of your forms seem to belong to the same 3D space and they come together solidly and believably, I also like to see that you have filled up the page as it was required.

-While wrapping up your submission with the organic intersections exercise you do a great job demonstrating that your sense of 3D space is developing as your forms begin to wrap around each other believably. You're keeping your forms simple and easy to work with which is a good strategy to help produce good results. In the future I'd like you to draw through all of your forms.. When drawing your shadows you don't push them far enough to cast, instead they mostly hug the form creating them, try pushing them further. Your shadows appear to be following a consistent light source, be sure to experiment with different angles and intensities when trying this exercise again in the future. I recommend pushing your light source to the top left or right corner of the page to start with, it's easier than working with a light directly above your form pile.

Overall this was a solid submission, while you may have some things to work on I have no doubt you will improve with more mileage. I'll be marking your submission as complete and moving you on to the next lesson.
