Hello i am Doctormein and i'll be critiquing your work for today.

Arrows.

Your arrow look so far so good and felt believable, However it seem like you forgot add Shading and line weight like the step provided here. https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/4/step4 so please make sure to do so.

Organic form with contour curve , Ellipses.

This exercise need quite a bit of help.

First and foremost You're not drawing through your ellipses. ALWAYS remember to draw through your ellipses 2 - 3 times for the entire course.

Secondly When drawing the ellipses or contour curve. ALWAYS keep in mind how they turn in space. If you forgot how ellipses will look when turned in space i recommend referring back to this step in organic form. https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/5/ellipses I've also made diagram regarding this issue too which i'll provide here. https://imgur.com/a/3Q0mP2O Right now you're drawing ellipses and contour curve with the same degree. Which will make the form felt flat and unconvincing

Finally Quite a bit of form you've drawn is actually more like ellipses rather than a sausages form. https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/5/simplesausage try to keep your form simple will certainly help it being perceived as 3d more easily.

Texture Analysis

When you attempted to draw texture Try to think of Cast shadow & Shapes rather than outlines and lines. Since this will give you a much better deal of control when you wish to lower the detail density.

And when you're drawing smaller form (tiny rocks or something that change surface topology.) Try not to enclose form entirely, But rather leave some opening https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/6/drawingforms

Dissections

As previously mentioned in texture analysis. all of them can be applied here

and try to make the texture curve more around the curve would be great too.

I am sorry to sound harsh but the crystal and mushroom you've drawn. In my opinion doesn't seem like a texture but more like a seperate entity which construction should be applied

Form intersection

The main goal of this exercise is not about intersection but to try to draw the form that felt like it belong to the same scene.

So i'll be critiquing mainly on that

Firstly A large margin of form you've drawn is being stretched which is not ideal for this exercise since it will distract you from the true intent of the exercise.

Secondly You're drawing group of form rather than one big overlapping group. you should draw the form overlapping and interconnecting even if it look visually confusing

And i think lastly. You're using pencil to draw the hatching and some intersection. If you have pen and ink the work should always be done in pen and ink if possible since it will taught the content of lesson being taught here better.

And additionally the ellipses you've drawn in this exercise is not being drawn 2-3 time so please refer back to organic form section i've critiqued

Organic intersections

This exercise is.. pretty hard to do. But there's glaring mistake you tend to make here and there so i'll point it out for you.

(The mistake you made is mostly from organic form mistake so please refer back to that again.)

when drawing organic form you should always draw the contour curve AROUND the form. If you're drawing contour curve like what you've done in the exercise the shape will be perceived as flat rather than 3d

Secondly drawing througn your form is an essential part to understanding 3d! This applied too with the contour curve and ellipses if a form is being blocked by another form always draw them through!

Thirdly you are using complicated form rather than a simple form. This most likely happen because of organic form exercise so i recommend doing that as warmup a ton.

Next Steps:

I am sorry but i would need an additional pages for nearly all of the exercise focusing on what i've critiqued

And ALWAYS ALWAYS check the instruction and follow them RELIGIOUSLY.

2 Pages of Organic form (1 Ellipses 1 Contour curve.)

3 Pages of form intersections

2 Pages of Organic intersection

If you haven't got your 250 boxes and lesson 1 critiqued yet I highly recommend to get that done first before moving on to this lesson.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Welcome back! Solarlily, I'll be critiquing your revision now.

Organic forms.

For the ellipses variant of this exercise, You've done pretty good,

you're trying your best to make sure that the ellipses degrees are different and gave the illusion of them turning in 3d space,

I think your organic forms would be better if you gave them poles Like this because it gave the viewer the information about whether or not the form is facing toward or away from the viewer.

Here is a picture of a bit more advanced version from the official Drawabox discord server https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/368871002584907776/867744968432549928/QTEqgJa_1.png?width=618&height=601

For the contour variant of this exercise, Always remember that the degree shift is still in effect here. (Take a look at the advanced version picture i send you above.)

For the sausages themselves, Try your best to not make them a bit too elongated or misshaped, https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/5/simplesausage although this isn't that big of a deal (Since you seem to be getting quite great already) It might still be a good idea to take notice of it.

Form Intersection.

Although this is not stuff that i usually mentioned, I think it would be a good idea not to use colored pen, Unless the instruction clearly stated to use it.

Now, For your boxes they seem to have quite a clear diverging lines, As usual i would advise that you should get 250 boxes challenge. marked as completed first, before proceeding onward to make sure you're not missing any important lesson content.

For the meat and potatoes of the exercises, Is for you to draw form resembling the same scene, Which i think you've done quite good for the lesson, https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/8/stretched i will still provide this link, Because some of your form felt a bit stretched sometimes, but i think this part is quite ok from now on.

Organic intersection

The biggest thing i've saw here is that, You're not drawing through your forms. if you won't draw through your form, it'll be harder to grasp the spatial reasoning skill that the course is meant to teach you

Secondly, For organic intersection, we don't use ellipses, We use contour lines, make sure to try your best and follow instruction to the letter.

Thirdly and lastly, Some of your form felt a bit too complex for the exercises always remember to keep things simple, so the illusion can be conveyed much more effectively https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/9/complicated

Thank you DoctorMein! I will look into the links and practice them. I had done the 250 box challenge right after lesson 1. Below is the link to it. Once again thanks for reviewing!!!

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Drawabox-Tested Fineliners (Pack of 10, $17.50 USD)

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
