Hi,

congrats on completing lesson one, I'll be critiquing your work.

Lines

To start, I noticed quite a bit of wobbliness when you make marks, are you using your wrist rather than your shoulder? https://drawabox.com/lesson/1/2/pivots

You want to draw from your shoulder to create smooth confident marks. You also do not need to worry so much about being accurate, as that improves over time.

I noticed a fair amount of fraying at both ends of your superimposed lines, remember- you want to try to place your pen at the same starting position each time you make a mark here.

Ellipses

Your ellipses in planes work is looking pretty good, however there were only a few instances where the ellipse escaped the bounds of the plane, or was too small and did not touch the sides of the plane. Your ellipses appear to have been drawn through multiple times, and confidently.

Your table of ellipses looks good as well, the only real issue was that in some cases your ellipses were not fitting within the bounds of the table.

In your funnels, the ellipses appear to be aligned with the minor axis, which is good, however, they are all spaced apart- not touching each other snugly. I also noticed that some of your ellipses are not fitting within the funnels.

I recommend checking out the homework page again for funnels if you found my explanation inadequate.

Boxes

Your rotated boxes are looking good! Other than the fact that only half of them are finished, the rest are rotating continuously away from the viewer, good work!

In your organic perspective work, I noticed that you redrew over some lines, don't do that. Once you make a mark, that's it, you'll just have to live with it regardless if it's good or bad.

Once again, good work on completing lesson one, before I mark the lesson as complete however, I would like for you to finish your rotated boxes page, and do 1 extra page of funnels, good luck!

Next Steps:

Finish the rotated boxes page and do another page of funnels

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi thank you for taking time out of your day to critique my work It helped a lot.

So I did two of the funnels exercises and finished rotating boxes as you asked me to do. They should be added to my Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes album at the bottom of the page. https://photos.app.goo.gl/wAgodjX8ikUA6y359

For the funnel, I only did another one because I didn't understand what I was doing at first, but I'm slowly understanding what you meant by keeping them snugly.

For the rotating boxes though, I wanted someone to look at my work before I continued working on them, but I gave up on doing it.

The thing that was confusing me the most was getting lost when i was making the boxes. Sometimes when I made a box I would get confused by the line weight and I would start seeing the box in a different angle confusing me. So I started rotating the page for the angles that were confusing me and it helped.

And for my lines I'm still trying to get used to drawing with my whole arm, but I think I'm getting better at it.

Good work! Using your shoulder to draw takes a bit of getting used to, yeah. For what I mentioned about the funnels, I recommend going back to the homework page for it in lesson 1 and reading through it again to clarify some things.

I think you're ready to move on to the 250 box challenge, good luck!

Next Steps:

250 box challenge!

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something we've used ourselves, or know to be of impeccable quality. If you're interested, here is a full list.

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
