Hello, I'm gonna do a critique for you today! It's my first review, but I'll try my best to give you a proper one.
Superimposed Lines
They lines seem pretty good, but there's a little fraying on the left side, especially on the long ones. You should strive to make it so all of your superimposed lines start from the same spot, like the first 5 you drew, they are pretty good. Don't be afraid to look at the the spot where your lines start and position your liner there for every line, but if that makes your lines less confident, then don't worry about that for now and do as you did before. I'd say the fraying is noticable only on the first 2 long lines, so it's all good. Also some of your lines arch a bit, so try to mentally bend them the opposite direction, so they turn out straighter. As for your line confidence, I'd say it's very good, the lines don't wobble at all.
Ghosted Lines
The lines wobble a little, but nothing too bad. Here the lines don't arch at all and hit the opposite dot pretty nicely. It's alright that lines overshoot a little, soon you will hit the opposite dots much better.
Ghosted Planes
The planes look really good, although there's noticeable overshooting, but it's alright. There's a little wobble, but the lines are still pretty straight.
Tables of Ellipses
I'd say this is a pretty hard exercise, but you did great. Most of the ellipses touch the corners of their squares and the tables are filled. The ellipses themselves are a little wobbly, but I still can tell you drew them with confidence.
Ellipses in Planes
Everything is good.
Funnels
Ellipses touch the funnel walls, except for one, where they overshoot and undershoot a little, but I'd assume it was your first one. Overall everything here is pretty good.
Plotted perspective
All your lines are drawn with a ruler (or a line tool I suppose?) so that's good. Overall everything is good, but... I'd highly recommend drawing with only one color. Yes, it's way more difficult to make sense and navigate your drawing, but later on when you will be doing construction exercises, the skill to navigate your drawings will be essential, so even though your doing your exercises digitally please still use only black color.
Rought perspective
Here some lines are pretty wobbly, maybe you hurried in that exercise, but make sure to always ghost your lines a couple of times before actually drawing them. Not all of the edges hit the vanish point, but it's alright. Make sure to first ghost your edges to the vanish line before actually drawing them.
Rotated Boxes
Here I'd say you did way better then when I did it. Overall pretty good, so good job. You can also add boxes in the 4 corners, but it's not necessary.
Organic Perspective'
Here it looks like you hurried again, as most of the edges are pretty wobbly, but the boxes themselves are pretty good and go from small to big. They converge pretty nicely and not too dramatic which is good.
My thoughts
I'd say you did every exercise pretty nicely. The main points to look after are:
-
Don't forget about line confidence. Always use the 3 step ghosting method, where you first draw 2 points, then ghost between them a couple of time (Don't go back and forth, always go from point 1 to point 2, then lift your pencil and return to point one then repeat that a couple of times. I used to do it the wrong way, but when I started lifting my pencil, my ghosting improved massively.) and only after that draw the lines, not thinking about how it will turn out, just in a one confident stroke, as if your eyes were closed and you just used your memory of ghosting the said line.
-
Do not hurry and give your all to each exercise. Only that way will you improve. All of the skills from the lesson one will be crucial for the next lessons.
-
Use only the black color. Personally I'd recommend drawing traditionally with a fine liner, but if you really don't want or can't, I think it's fine drawing digitally.
Next Steps:
I give you a pass, and now you can move onto the 250 boxes challange. It will take a while, so I recommend drawing 6-12 boxes a day to not burn out. Make sure to use the ghosting method here to train your line confidence, cause that's really a crucial skill. Good luck on the 250 boxes challenge!
Cottonwood Arts Sketchbooks
These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
