Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your lesson 1 homework
Lines
-Starting with the superimposed lines I can see that you have always started from a clearly defined point and kept all the wavering on one side, I do notice that you were a little hesitant when drawing your lines, I think you may have drawn them slowly and that is the reason why they turned out like that. One thing that can help you is to draw your lines a little bit faster so they end up fully confident. Also keep in mínd that at this early stage you should prioritize confidence over accuracy.
-Moving on to the ghosted lines these are drawn with a good deal of confidence and overall you are doing a better job committing to your marks, the only issue here is that your lines tend to arch slightly, this only means that you need more time to get comfortable while drawing your marks from your shoulder.
-The ghosted planes are no different from the ghosted lines, and here your lines are turning out well here.
Ellipses
-On the tables of ellipses you are doing a pretty good job and your ellipses are symmetrical and well rounded which is exactly what we are looking for, you are also drawing trough them as needed, but sometimes it seems that you are drawing through them more times than necessary, only draw through them 2-3 times.
-The ellipses in planes are turning out well, here I can clearly see that you are drawing through them more than three times, if you do it more than 3 times your ellipses will start to become quite stiff and that is something you should try to avoid. I also want to call out another important thing: You might be thinking that the center of the ellipses is the same as the center of the planes or that you should modify the elliptical ellipse shape so it touches the contact points, but this is not the case. Ellipses have to be symmetrical and have the same shape regardless of where they are, so the only things you can change is how wide the ellipse is and which position it is in.
-Aside from the issues already mentioned you are doing a great job on the funnels exercise, your ellipses are fitting snugly within the funnel shape and you are doing a good job aligning them to the minor axis, and the ellipses are cut into equal halves by it.
Boxes
-Starting with the rough perspective I want to call out a few things, first, it is nice to see that you are using hatching but remember to be very careful when adding each additional line, use the ghosting method to ensure that you are thinking about each mark’s purpose and how you are going to achieve it best, each line is no less important for being part of a larger group so give each one of them as much attention and focus as it requires. The main issue here is that you are creating unintentional focal points because of all that visual noise.
Now I also want to talk about lineweight, on your second page your line weights are pretty thick, you only want to apply it on the local parts where overlap occur, you also want to very subtle with it, only add one extra superimposed line and ghost it so that it ends fully confident, I want to quickly redirect you to this diagram which shows how to correctly apply lineweight and take a look at this one too which shows how to apply lineweight to a box.
When it comes to the actual objectives of this exercise I think you are doing a pretty good job aligning the sides of the boxes to the horizon line and your estimation will get better with practice.
-The rotated boxes are turning out quite well as you have kept the gaps between boxes narrow and consistent and you are clearly thinking about the rotation, I think you are being more mindful when applying lineweight and hatching. I also like to see that you have made full use of the space available in your page, and your marks are looking confident while maintaining good accuracy.
-Finishing with the organic perspective your linework is looking confident which has definitely helped your boxes look more solid and believable, and you are already making some good attempts at the perspective of the boxes, Main thing here is that you should only apply lineweight on the parts where overlap occurs and not to the entire box.
Well, this got rather long so overall you are already doing a good job. I just want to make sure of a few things before letting you move on, so I’ll leave you some additional work below. Best of luck!!
Next Steps:
Please do the following
-1 page of superimposed lines.
