Hello, and congrats on completing the challenge. Let’s get right to the critique.

The first thing I notice is that the boxes are quite small. As per the instructions in the homework section of the challenge, you should’ve drawn 5-6 boxes per page. Bigger boxes are more difficult, and they allow for more space to think about all of the various problems we face during this challenge. Another thing I notice is that there’s not a lot of variety to your boxes. Not only are their shapes and angles similar, but the degree of foreshortening is, too. It would’ve been nice to see some more experimentation in regards to that. Though there’s still some issues with the center lines not heading in the right direction, the convergence of your lines does improve throughout the set, as does your line-work. I do wish you’d been a little more patient with your hatching, though. Similar to all of your other lines, the hatching lines need to be ghosted, too.

Next Steps:

Keeping all of my points in mind, I’d like to request that you do 25 more boxes. They should be fairly big (no more than 6 boxes per page), of various shapes, sizes, and inner angles, and their foreshortening should range from dramatic to shallow. See if you can try some 1pp and 2pp boxes, too.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Yup- looks good. There's still the occasional divergence, so be mindful of that. Also, and don't do this exclusively, because it is important to experiment, but just the same, be careful that the foreshortening is consistent on each axis (that is to say, the vanishing points should be equally away from the center of the Y, rather than one side being really dramatic, and the others really shallow, etc.). Anyway, i'll be marking this as complete, so congratulations, and good luck!

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
