Lesson 3: Applying Construction to Plants

I hope you can see the images. Thanks in advance for any feedback.
Hi Owtu,
I've checked your submission,
First of all your organic arrows are looking good, it seems like you are exploring the space in the page with them and trying to move them around. Though, you are not creating enough depth, you are definitely moving them around in the x and y axis, but not enough in the z. One thing that will really help you with this is making the space between the arrow, smaller as it goes back.
Next, leaves did a good job here, you are not afraid of imposing your lines, so you are creating interesting flows and you are trying out different ways in which this leaves flow.
Branches look good overall, but I'm seeing that you are not changing the degrees of your ellipses as they move through space. Remember that is like the organic forms, you have to add variety in your ellipses, to sell better the illusion of depth.
Now on to your plants
First common issue I see is that you are not changing the degree of the ellipses, now I've arleady talked about this previously, but here is something I did for another person. As the branch goes below the horizon line, the ellipses get wider.
Another thing that I'm seeing is that, besides branches, you are no adding contour lines to you forms. Now, remember that contour lines are a tool we have to show how something sits in 3d space, it's bad to over use them, but it's also bad to not use them at all. The point of this exercises it's to create believable 3d forms and to do that we have to show, ourselves and the viewer how it is 3d, a way to do this is contour lines. Keep this in mind moving foward.
One thing that caught my attention was the difference in your leaves in your leaves exercises and in your plants. In your leaves you are rocking it, but it looks like in the rest of the lesson you started stiffening up those leaves and not really making them flow like you showed you can do. I imagine this is because as you get into constructing a whole plant you are also worrying about other things so you give them that much attention. You can solve this by giving yourself more time with each plant!
Overall you did a good job, remember to think about 3d space and showing that you are thinking in 3d space, also take your time. I'm gonna mark this lesson as completed, keep it up.

These are my favourite sketchbooks, hands down. Move aside Moleskine, you overpriced gimmick. These sketchbooks are made by entertainment industry professionals down in Los Angeles, with concept artists in mind. They have a wide variety of sketchbooks, such as toned sketchbooks that let you work both towards light and towards dark values, as well as books where every second sheet is a semitransparent vellum.
