Congrats on finishing lesson 1!

Lines:

Lines look good and confident. There are lots of fraying at the end of them but it's normal in the beginning, you'll get more accurate as you practice more and more.

Planes and ellipses in planes:

Planes are good, same for the ellipses. They all touch the bounds of the planes and fit well in them. Great!

Table of ellipses:

Also very good, you tried to fit them into the spaces and they are quite confident too.

Funnels:

And here also, funnels look very good. Ellipses fit nicely in them, they're all kept within the bounds and never overlapping. Good job.

Plotted perspective:

The boxes are all quite good but remember that hatching doesn't have to be on the same side for every box. You should hatch the front side or any side that faces the viewer. Anyways boxes are accurate.

Rough perspective:

Looks pretty solid. I see you are trying to prioritize confidence in your lines, which is a good thing.

Rotated boxes:

This is a good first attempt. Boxes borders are kept close and they really seem to rotate. One thing: you forgot to hatch. Not a major concern though. Also you can try to revisit this excercise after the 250 box challenge to see your improvement.

Organic perspective:

All of the panels look good. You also tried to give it a sense of depth and perspective and varied the Y axis of the boxes, great!

Yeah overall you did very well on all the exercises, you should just jump right into the 250 box challenge. Don't forget to always do warm ups with some of these excercises. And also: don't grind it!

Next Steps:

250 box challenge. Have fun!

Hello !

For the line section, I think it’s an overall good job. Some of the longer lines in the super imposed lines exercices are a bit wobbly, but I think it’s not a big deal. I would recommend to stay careful in the ghosted lines exercices because a good part of the lines are wobbly and arching. Some of them are really straight and confident, but others are too hesitant to be acceptable, maybe it’s a matter of where you draw your lines – are you drawing from the shoulder ? Perhaps you wanted both ends to touch the point, it is understandable but as said, it shouldn’t overwhelmed the confidence of your line.

For the ellipse section, I believe that the tables of ellipses are good. For the ellipses in plane, some of them are a bit hunchbacked but it is not a generality so for me it’s a good work. Same for the funnels.

I do not see any mistakes for the plotted perspective exercise. In the rough perspective exercise some of the width and height line are not really parallel to the horizon line, but it’s an hard task and it is acceptable, but this is still important to have this in mind.

The errors were avoided in my opinion for the rotated box and for the organic perspective exercises, it was a pretty tough exercices and I believe you passed trough it.

Next Steps:

Move on to the 250 box challenge, bearing in mind the criticisms of the ghost line exercises.

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
