Hello I am JustCuteGirlz and I will be reviewing your box challenge.

The good:

  • you are using line weight correctly and effectively. Line weight is a very difficult skill that only gets better with use, so starting early is critical.

  • you are using hatching to show the front side of the box correctly.

  • it looks like you are doing a good job in experimenting with different orientations and proportions with your boxes. This important because when you experiment it allows you to get a bigger grasp on the concepts and how they apply in different situations.

Things you can work on:

  • None of your boxes have that much foreshortening to them. I would do some boxes with there vanishing points closer to your box just so you have a better understanding of perspective. This is just one thing you can try and experiment with.

  • Some of your lines are occasionly wobbly. Make sure that before you execute your line that you have done enough ghosting and your drawing in the best possible angle.

You have clearly shown great improvement with the 250 boxes that you have drawn and are ready to move on to Lesson 2

Next Steps:

  • Continue on the Lesson 2

  • during warm ups pratice drawing boxes with more foreshortening.

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete. In order for the student to receive their completion badge, this critique will need 2 agreements from other members of the community.

Thank you so much!

Staedtler Pigment Liners

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
