Lesson 1: Lines, Ellipses and Boxes
4:26 AM, Wednesday June 9th 2021
In Rough Perspective by mistake i drew the face of the boxes using rulers. Although rest of the part of the box is done by hand.
Hey Heiwa!
Your lines are very confident, well done.
Make sure your ellipses are always touching the edge of the table and/or another ellipse. Same for the funnels exercise, make sure your ellipses are snug next to each other and touching.
Your ghosted planes exercise and ellipses inside of them should take up more of the page, really pack them in there as in the example homework.
A few of your ellipses only have 1 pass done, please remember to go over your ellipses at least 2 times and at most 3 times.
Your ellipses are quite wobbly, remember to keep up your confident line quality while making them and ignore accuracy as much as you seem to be doing. Focus on getting a nice ellipse before you try and get them to touch all the edges inside of the ghosted planes, some of them stretch out to touch the edge which you should avoid.
Remember that in rough perspective all horizontal lines should be parrallel to the horizon line, a few of yours were slanted.
In the rotated boxes exercise your second set of boxes follow to a similar vanishing point as your third set of boxes, this means that you rotate your boxes once but not a second time. Remember to rotate them even further as your get further away from the center box. Often those boxes near the edge will have very little face showing.
Nice confident lines in the organic perspective. Overall I think you did well but I will ask for some revisions before giving a completion. I recommend that you redo one page of the tables of ellipses exercise where you aim to have your ellipses touching the sides of the table and the other ellipses as shown in the example homework. You want to jam pack that table completely full with ellipses. I'd also like to see a few ellipses inside ghosted planes with a fuller page and the advice for confident ellipses that I gave implemented.
Next Steps:
1 page of table of ellipses
1 page of ellipses inside ghosted planes
Hello snaps,
Firstly thank you for your feedback on my homework.
Here's my revision and i've tried to fit more elipses and tried to be more confident in my lines.
Maybe this is in right direction?
Here's the link for revision: revision
Thank you
Perfect! It seems you understood the criticism, you should move on now. Awesome job, keep up the hardwork.
Next Steps:
Move on to the 250 box challenge.
Thanks a ton.
Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.
Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.
These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.
We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.
Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
