Hello MsPieg, I'd like to start off the review by saying great job on completing lesson 1 of the course. LINES - Your lines are already looking very confident which is really good. I like the variations you added on the superimposed lines. There is some overshooting on ghosted lines but nothing some practice can't fix. Be mindful of letting your arm be loose, not stiff, and drawing from your shoulder. The more you keep this in mind now, the easier it will become later on. Ghosted planes look fine, although, it looks like you did them in pencil? (the ones with no ellipses) Please correct me if I am mistaken. ELLIPSES - Your ellipses look good as well. I like how compact you made them on tables of ellipses ( as they should be). For the funnels exercise, try to make the ellipses get larger as they move out from the center. BOXES - Your rough perspective looks pretty good. For rotated boxes, remember to shade the edges not facing the viewer. Overall, really great work, it almost seems like you have done this before, either that or you have a very steady hand. In any case, great job and I think you are ready to face the 250 box challenge. GOOD LUCK!

Thank you for the thorough critique! To answer your one question, ghosted planes were done in ballpoint pen, although that pen was probably dying so the lines were pretty thin.

Hi, solid submission. I would like to add a few things.

Some of your ellipses are wobbly. Next time make sure you take your time and ghost as many times as you need. It seems you are prioritising even ellipses instead of tightly fitting the borders and it is great.

You have missed the corner boxes in the rotated box exercise. You should draw them before continuing. Once you have completed it I can agree with the previous review and give you your badge (if someone hadn't done it by the time).

If you are worrying about ruining the page, don't. The exercise is for learning, not looking pretty

Next Steps:

Add the missing boxes to the rotated boxes exercise

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Added the final boxes -- not really sure what difference they make since the area is so narrow there they're not really visible.

No need for them to add to the image or be visible as long as you are thinking about them and trying to draw them.

The one on the top left seems to be done hastily as the line starts from nowhere and ends at nowhere (it connects to nothing)

Make sure you take your time for every line you draw.

Good luck in your 250 boxes.

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
