I started rough, in addition to mistakes such as convergence and non-cube shapes. Also, I may have used the colored pens incorrectly for the lines. Other than that, there should be at least some good boxes.

hello

i'll be handeling the critique for your 250 boxes challenge. congrats on finishing it.

  • starting off with some positive- you're propely using ghosting method which is good. and your hatching lines are mostly looking neat as well despite some wobbliness in few instances.

  • what you seem to have most trouble with is understanding the line extentions. you need to extend the lines away fron the viewer as explained here. this might not make a lot of sense as a beginner but if you extend your lines following the initial Y shape used for drawing the boxes it'd turn out correct each time. this part of the lesson explains it here. while, sometimes you got the extentions correct.

  • another recurring issue with your boxes is the lines are having divergences (moving away from each other) instead of convergences (heading towards the same vanishing point). check this part for reference.

  • one more thing to note is that most if the boxes have a similar orientation. it's a good habit to build to start experimenting with different orientations for your boxes as this will help develop your 3D perception and how things are placed in a 2D space.

  • what i'd also point out is that you have attempted very few boxes with shallow forshortening and most of them have quite dramatic foreshortening. a few are also in isometric perspective.

  • and lastly, adding line weight isn't a required part if this challenge but it's good to start at least making an attempt at it as this will be needed in the later lessons. check out this example for line weight in the context of a box.

so, i'd say you made a good attempt. however, before you're ready to move on to the next lesson i'd like to see you take your time with going over the text of the challenge once more and draw 10 more boxes. this time with correct extention lines and mostly having line convergences. do not worry about having the inner corners wrong or perfecting a box with line-weight and everything though, because those improvements will happen over time with further practice. (as boxes and previous lessons become part of the warmup).

best wishes!

Next Steps:

draw 10 boxes with extentions line away from the viewer. try to be mindful of the convergences too!

Sorry for the long wait. I've been busy trying to get 10 boxes in one day and there was a lot of failed attempts (which are excluded from the folder).

If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to let me know about it.

Hello Armanthecreative!

Taking over the response to your revisions in Blue_winters' absence.

It's good to see that you're taking the time to plan and evenly space your hatching lines. This helps keep your boxes tidy and makes them look more solid. I did notice some of your hatching lines are wobbly. Make sure you're using the ghosting method and drawing from the shoulder to execute them with confidence. In drawabox you should always prioritise confidence over accuracy.A wobbly line is a mistake, no matter how accurate, and a confident line will be correct, as with practice the accuracy will get better.

You're extending all your lines in the correct direction, away from the viewer, great work!

The key things we want to remember from this exercise are that our lines should always converge as a set not in pairs, never diverge from the vanishing point and due to perspective they won't be completely parallel.

It looks like most of the sets of lines in your revisions are parallel on the page. They should be converging to a vanishing point, which may be near or far, but cannot be at infinite distance. I'd like to see you do a page of boxes with lines that converge, please. I don't expect them to all converge together perfectly, but having them parallel is a mistake. If you follow this step by step guide it should help you make your lines converge. (There may still be issues with the inner back corner, but this method will get all your outer lines to converge.)

Next Steps:

Please complete 1 page of boxes, using the attached method to help your lines converge.

Since a lot of our students want to break into working with digital painting however, I thought this course in particular would be a great start to get into the weeds with how to navigate the confusing world of layers, brushes, and more.

This course highlights programs across the full spectrum of options, ranging from the current industry standard Adobe Photoshop, to the Free-and-Open-Source darling Krita, as well as the mobile favourite, Procreate.
