Hi, I’ll be critiquing your work today! Congrats on reaching this point!

Superimposed Lines

I think you did a great job here! For the most part, your lines look confidently executed. Your lines are also frayed on only one end, meaning you took your time and made sure that your starting point was accurate. As you continue to practice this exercise in your warmups, the fraying should lessen overtime.

I did notice that some of your lines were unintentionally arching a little bit. Make sure you’re using your shoulder to draw. If you are using your shoulder and the lines are still curving, you can try to arch in the opposite direction to compensate.

Ghosted Lines

I can see that you focused on confident mark-making here! Amazing job with this exercise. I will say, the point of this exercise is to try as many different line angles as you can. So, in the future, you should try to do this exercise in the way that was shown on the website. Also, some lines have slight curves, suggesting either hesitation or a lack of ghosting.

Ghosted Planes

Overall, you are ghosting and showcasing confident mark-making! You did create a variety of different types of planes with varying angles. However, I think you could try some more extreme angles to get the most value out of this exercise.

Ellipses

Amazing job with this exercise! For the most part, your shapes look confidently executed, and the ellipses look even. The ellipses also fit snugly against each other and against the borders. You also draw through your ellipses twice! Great work!

Ellipses in Planes

I can see that you are making an effort to have your ellipses touch all 4 edges of the planes, and you are successful for the majority of them! Also, for the most part, your ellipses look very smooth and even! Awesome job! There are a few instances with slight deformations. Remember to focus more on getting even shapes than accuracy.

Funnels

It does look like you’re aligning the ellipses with the minor axis, so good job with that! Most of the ellipses are touching the funnels, and they are snug with each other too, so well done! It seems like you did some self-analysis here, which is great. As the notes say, you do have some deformed ellipses, suggesting hesitation or a lack of proper ghosting.

Plotted Perspective

Your boxes are drawn correctly in this exercise. Your verticals are perpendicular to the horizon line, and you are plotting the edges to the vanishing points. Great work with that! The main issue here is the hatching. Your hatching lines often fall short of the edge. Make sure you are being very intentional with your hatching lines, and make sure you are still ghosting and drawing with your shoulder for these lines. Also, only do hatching on one of the box planes, not two.

Rough Perspective

For most boxes, I can see you’re making an effort to have your front and back faces be rectangles (meaning the horizontals are parallel to the horizon line and the verticals are perpendicular to it). However, some of the verticals are not fully perpendicular to the horizon line, so make sure you pay attention to that. The line extensions are applied correctly, and you are ghosting your lines, so good job with that. However, I am noticing that you redrew some of your lines. Again, we are focusing on confident execution, so do not redraw lines even if they are inaccurate.

Rotated Boxes

Here, the gaps between the boxes are tight and consistent. You have drawn all the boxes in the set, and you have rotated the boxes correctly! You have also drawn through most of your boxes so that we can see the back corner. This was a tough challenge, and you did an amazing job! I will say that you are missing the back corners of your corner boxes, so you might want to add those in.

Also, to me, it seems like you have a good understanding of the exercise, so I don’t think you should redo it. All these exercises will be added to a warmup pool in the future, so you will naturally have to do it again as a warmup in the future anyways.

Organic Perspective

For the most part, your sets of edges are converging as they move away from the viewer, so great job with that! I think you did a good job with creating boxes of different sizes, and you are clearly using the ghosting method here, so great job with that! Again, try to be more intentional with your hatching lines and use the ghosting method for those lines. Also, I would recommend trying some more dramatic scale changes, especially trying more boxes that go off-page.

Don’t worry too much about this exercise. The next challenge is the 250 box challenge, and it explains more about rotating boxes.

Conclusion

Finishing Lesson 1 is a huge task, and you did it!!! I think you’re ready to move on to the 250 box challenge. Remember to add all these exercises to your warmup pool. As a reminder, you should try to do 10-15 minutes of warmup every time before you draw.

The next task is a huge one, but you got this!
