FINALLY!! After almost 3 years I finished this challenge! :D I didn't use hatching for the first some because it was optional, but later I decided to use them. Pleeeease tell me I don't have to redo it again. The progress is insane, I think. :)

Thank you!!

Hello!

That's awesome that it's been 3 years about this. And the truth is that you can see a lot of progress.

Above all, I can always mention a few things to highlight:

Lines:

Your lines look stable and without distinguishable errors in them.

Regarding line weight and shading, both well drawn and applied in place.

I like that neither looks rushed drawn.

Box construction:

  • It's quite helpful if you've drawn your boxes in various orientations, so you won't be surprised when you're asked to draw them in various positions in later lessons.

  • I see you practiced boxes with deep and shallow foreshortening.

While both are useful in future boxes you will want to stick more to shallow foreshortening.

This is because shallow foreshortening represents objects of common scale and not very close to the viewport, which we will draw in the next few lessons.

  • You will notice that in several boxes your lines converge in pairs.

As in this image:

This is a mistake to avoid.

It usually helps to think of the relationship of each line as a set to its vanishing point.

Shown here: https://imgur.com/8PqQLE0

As you will see, the inner pair of lines will have a somewhat similar orientation, while the outer pair will vary more depending on the position of the vanishing point.

If the vanishing point is far away, the lines will be more parallel; and if it is close, the lines will converge faster due to their foreshortening.

Conclusion:

I'll leave you a minimum of homework to rectify just that odd convergence in pairs.

And take the opportunity to draw the boxes with shallow foreshortening.

Next Steps:

  • Draw 15 more boxes.

Keep in mind what is mentioned in the critique.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Hi!

Thank you for your critique!

Here is the homework, the plus 15 boxes with shallow foreshortening and hopefully better convergence.

I have to say, shallow foreshortening is hard. :) Nevertheless, I tried my best, even in box 11, where I got confused with all the things I wanted to correct.

Thank you again, hope I can step forward in the lessons. :)

I'm so glad you were able to complete the assignment!

And, you're right. The shallow foreshortening is difficult at first.

But you will be able to notice an improvement in the solidity of your boxes.

Regarding convergence, the pair issue is still there but it is diminishing,

By being aware of it and correcting it when you can, you'll be fine...

I will mark your task as complete. Good luck in what's ahead!

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
