6 boxes 35 pages + 5 boxes 8 pages = 250 boxes

I alternated between red and extension lines for clarity, sometimes they would overlap and were difficult to distinguish

This exercise was somehow more grueling than I thought! I found boxes with small amounts of forshortening more difficult to draw, since the vanishing point is so far away the angles need to be really precise. Overall I definitely feel more comfortable with 3d space and vanishing points, drawing the extension lines helped a lot in identifying mistakes.

Hi there, I'll be handling your box challenge critique.

Congratulations on completing the 250 box challenge! While usually I love to dig into the positives of a student's work, I have a big pile of work to get through, and we're suffering through a pretty brutal heat wave - so I'll just get right into it.

Things you did well:

  • Your lines appear more confident, accurate and less sketchy as you progress through the challenge.

  • You're attempting to make use of line weight and while you may still have room to improve it's a tool that requires a lot of mileage to become comfortable using so it's good that you're starting to use it early on.

  • Your hatching is clearly thought out and appears confidently drawn rather than rushed.

  • Good work experimenting with proportions, orientations and rates of foreshortening. Building up a habit of experimenting with help you in the future as it's often the key to developing our understanding of new concepts.

  • Your convergences are much more consistent by the end of the challenge and there are fewer cases of diverging lines popping up and distorting your box.

Things you can work on:

  • While not a huge issue in their current state you could draw your boxes a bit larger to make better use of your page. Drawing large helps us become comfortable using our shoulder and allows us to see our mistakes more clearly. Yours are on the line of just big enough but drawing larger can be beneficial so it's worth considering in the future.

  • You're overshooting your stopping point at times, if you aren't already try lifting the pen while it's still moving to maintain your confidence. As you build up muscle memory you'll learn when the right time to lift your pen is to stop your line where you want.

  • There are moments where your lines are converging in pairs rather than as a set which you can see an example of here. I'll quickly point you to this example which shows how each line in a set relates to one another and their respective vanishing point. The inner pair of lines will be quite similar unless the box gets quite long and the outer pair can vary a lot depending on the location of the vanishing point. Move it further away and the lines become closer to parallel while moving it closer increases the rate of foreshortening.

The key things we want to remember from this exercise are that our lines should always converge as a set not in pairs, never diverge from the vanishing point and due to perspective they won't be completely parallel.

Overall this was a really solid submission and I have no doubt you'll continue to improve and grow with more mileage. I'll be marking your submission complete and moving you on to the next lesson. Keep practicing previous exercises as warm ups and good luck in lesson 2!

Next Steps:

Move on to lesson 2.

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thanks Tofu!

These are all insightful points, I noticed lines converging in sets sometimes while drawing these boxes. I definitely could've focused more on the where I put the back corner of the box, keeping in mind how that would effect the inner lines and where they should relatively be. Occasionally I would have to make a compromise on where this corner was because all the other errors added up and one edge would be off no matter what!

Anyway, thanks for your feedback, I'll try to keep all these points in mind going forward

Hope the heat wave eases where you are

This is a remarkable little pen. I'm especially fond of this one for sketching and playing around with, and it's what I used for the notorious "Mr. Monkey Business" video from Lesson 0. It's incredibly difficult to draw with (especially at first) due to how much your stroke varies based on how much pressure you apply, and how you use it - but at the same time despite this frustration, it's also incredibly fun.

Moreover, due to the challenge of its use, it teaches you a lot about the nuances of one's stroke. These are the kinds of skills that one can carry over to standard felt tip pens, as well as to digital media. Really great for doodling and just enjoying yourself.

I would not recommend this for Drawabox - we use brush pens for filling in shadow shapes, and you do not need a pen this fancy for that. If you do purchase it, save it for drawing outside of the course.
