Well, hi everybody ! I'm finally done with lesson one (after many hours- no, days), and I look foward for the rest of the lessons !

I would thank Uncomfortable and his team for making a really great course so far (or just a great course, really) and for basically saving my liking for drawing but, I dunno, I don't want to sound mushy (immaculate preterition, no one has it as good as me -but seriously, massive thanks to him).

As you can tell, there are a lot of written comments on my homework. I hope it's not too bad... it just helps me reflect on the exercise I've done. I can go on what I felt during these exercises, if you're interested. Maybe it helps... ?

Anyway, that's all I have to say. Thanks in advance for the one that will rate my homework, and I'll see you later (alligator).

P.S. : i'm a bit scared lol

Hello, first of all you finished lesson 1 in one day, bruh your work ethic goddamn amazing.

First thing I notice is your lines, your lines are very good, but sometimes they will curve slighty. I would recomend what uncomfortable mentioned to fix this problem, to purposefully arch your lines the opposite direction to even it out. It also tends to happen when you are not fully using your shoulder pivot. other than that, i see nothing wrong with your line work.

Your ellipses are also good, but I see that when you draw your ellipses that you tend to focus a little more on making them fit into the tables, and the funnels. I would worry about making your ellipses as smooth as possible, before worrying about accuracy. You will get better over time so its nothing to worry about.

Your boxes are pretty good, the only thing I see wrong is the arching lines sometimes, and on some boxes I notice there are lines that you go over as if you didn't like it the first time. Perhaps I am wrong, since there is so much going on in the organic perspective and boxes section.

Its also kinda hard to tell whats going in the organic perspective and boxes section and what box is what. . I would recommend going over twice and increasing the line weight on the lines that intersect with the other boxes next time. To show what box is which, since some boxes do seem to blend with each other.

Overall you did really good, Just those things that I mentioned although they seem minor, they make a massive difference.

Next Steps:

I would recommend doing the 250 box challenge, It will really help you understand things in 3d space better.

Hi ! So first of all thanks for the correction, it really helps me a lot !

Concerning the curvy lines, it got a bit worse when I completed a lesson, so yeah, I've been using Uncomfortable's technic to fix it.

For the ellipses... yeah, I knew I was being focused on accuracy in the funnels. I've been redoing this one exercise quite a few times as training... I'm getting better.

On the subject of boxes (really flexing my vocabulary here), yeah, I've been redoing some of my lines, particularely in the organic boxed exercise. I read later that I wasn't supposed to do that. So yeah, I'm not doing that anymore. Also, yeah, it's really hard to tell what's going in this particular exercise. I hate line-weight-ing with a burning passion (that's why I've been crosshatching), so I'll try doing fewer boxes.

Again, thanks for the reply, it helps a lot ! Wish you the best !

PS : No, I did not do the whole lesson in one day. I think it took me about two weeks... ? I'll still take the compliment though, if that's fine by you, because it was kinda long. And hard. And frustrating, sometimes.

No problem, after talking to some of the people on the discord they have also picked up some things I didn't pick up.

-The student didn't ghost the ellipses properly, the ellipses must go from one end to the other, you shouldn't add an ellipse in the middle and then one close and then one above, that way it's difficult to tell what the intent was and if it's a successful ellipses. (I beleive he was talking about the ellipses boxes exercies, in which you must draw many ellipses in one box.)

  • Tell the student to practice a wider variation of Ellipse's degrees, they mostly stuck with a few very similar ones, also to practice different sizes and perspectives of planes- (I beleive he was talking about the exercise in which you have to put an ellipse in the planes.)

  • To have taken more time with their hatching, since it doesn't touch the edges I feel like they rushed through that part when it should also be nicely done, and in plotted perspective you can even do it with a ruler

(Don't know why, but the fact that they call me "the student" is lowkey funny)

Just for the plotted perspective, it's just my ruler that's a bit broken, that's why the lines look uneven. But all the rest is very true (especially the ellipses, oh my god)

Great job on lesson 1!

Lines - These look great. Smooth, and confidently executed. There is a bit of fraying at the end of your superimposed lines but that is normal at the beginning and will improve with time! There is also some arching in a few lines, you can correct this by arching in the opposite direction and using your shoulder more.

Ellipses - These look well done. I would say to practice different sizes and vary the degrees - some more narrow, some wider.

Boxes - Overall not bad, your lines could be straighter but this is Lesson 1 and you will improve with practice. Keep ghosting and drawing from the shoulder! And not a bad first attempt with the rotated boxes, that one was super hard for me too.

Next up, the 250 Box Challenge. Good luck :)

Ellipse Master Template

Ellipse Master Template

This recommendation is really just for those of you who've reached lesson 6 and onwards.

I haven't found the actual brand you buy to matter much, so you may want to shop around. This one is a "master" template, which will give you a broad range of ellipse degrees and sizes (this one ranges between 0.25 inches and 1.5 inches), and is a good place to start. You may end up finding that this range limits the kinds of ellipses you draw, forcing you to work within those bounds, but it may still be worth it as full sets of ellipse guides can run you quite a bit more, simply due to the sizes and degrees that need to be covered.

No matter which brand of ellipse guide you decide to pick up, make sure they have little markings for the minor axes.
