Hello I’ll be handling the critique for your lesson 6 homework.

-Starting with the form intersections, the first thing I want to call out is that your lineweight is pretty far out here, it seems that you made a clean up pass which is not something we want to do as explained here in this section of lesson 2.

When it comes to the intersections themselves I think you are doing a great job, the main thing I want to draw your attention to is the cylinder-box intersection, for which you used some straight lines, while the faces of the cylinder are indeed flat the main body is actually rounded so any line cutting through the cylinder is not going to be a simple straight.

-Moving on to the objects you’re moving in the right direction in many ways.

I can see that you’ve spent a good deal of time planning your constructions and have used the subdivisions a good deal in order to be more precise when it comes to capturing the different elements in your objects.

Regarding your question about proportions the only thing I have to say is that you should not worry to much about it, the main focus of this lesson is precision.

Precision and accuracy are two different things and in the context of this course accuracy refers to how close you were to executing the mark you intended to, but precision has nothing to do with drawing that mark, instead it is about the steps and decisions that we take beforehand to declare our intentions. As long as you make your orthographic studies and apply them to the object in three dimensions is more than enough, while the proportion may be off that is not really a problem.

But if you’re really eager to know how to measure the things you are drawing more meaningfully then you can check the videos on lesson 7 or you can wait till you get to that lesson.

-You are doing a great job capturing the main forms and shapes of your objects, it is when it comes to the smaller and more nuanced details that you tend to really focus more on guesswork. A good example would be the last object which has a lot of organic curves and a very organic shape,, which makes it much harder to draw using the method we are employing here, the best thing to do in these cases is to break those curves into a series of straight lines, you can read more about this in this section of lesson 6 .

This simplifies the process of construction a good deal and lets you focus more on the smaller details.

For example the buttons on the bottom of your last object are placed mainly by eyeballing and guesswork I don't really see a lot of forethought gone into drawing that specific part, that’s why you should do your best to capture important landmarks in the orthographic studies,like the orto for the bottom part and the side of this object leaves a lot of landmarks loose and this one really deviates from the actual shape of the object. That’s why using straight lines rather than jumping into curves straight away is better as they are much easier to locate than curved lines.

-And lastly remember that in this lesson you’re allowed to make use of various tools like french curves, rulers, ellipse guides and ballpoint pens. I'd recommend you get hold of some of this, which will really help you to get the most out of these exercises.

But for what is worth your work is moving in the right direction so I’ll go ahead and mark this lesson as complete. Good luck on the next one!!

And you're totally right about the guesswork. At that point there were so many marks on the paper and I didn't know how to plan those best or I couldn't find a way to sort them in logically so I eyeballed more than I planned at those points. It was definitely a bit of frustration as well.

Let's be real here for a second: fineliners can get pricey. It varies from brand to brand, store to store, and country to country, but good fineliners like the Staedtler Pigment Liner (my personal brand favourite) can cost an arm and a leg. I remember finding them being sold individually at a Michael's for $4-$5 each. That's highway robbery right there.

Now, we're not a big company ourselves or anything, but we have been in a position to periodically import large batches of pens that we've sourced ourselves - using the wholesale route to keep costs down, and then to split the savings between getting pens to you for cheaper, and setting some aside to one day produce our own.

These pens are each hand-tested (on a little card we include in the package) to avoid sending out any duds (another problem with pens sold in stores). We also checked out a handful of different options before settling on this supplier - mainly looking for pens that were as close to the Staedtler Pigment Liner. If I'm being honest, I think these might even perform a little better, at least for our use case in this course.

We've also tested their longevity. We've found that if we're reasonably gentle with them, we can get through all of Lesson 1, and halfway through the box challenge. We actually had ScyllaStew test them while recording realtime videos of her working through the lesson work, which you can check out here, along with a variety of reviews of other brands.

Now, I will say this - we're only really in a position to make this an attractive offer for those in the continental United States (where we can offer shipping for free). We do ship internationally, but between the shipping prices and shipping times, it's probably not the best offer you can find - though this may depend. We also straight up can't ship to the UK, thanks to some fairly new restrictions they've put into place relating to their Brexit transition. I know that's a bummer - I'm Canadian myself - but hopefully one day we can expand things more meaningfully to the rest of the world.
