Hello! So happy to be done with the challenge!!

I posted my boxes as a PDF via icloud. I read somewhere that you guys prefer imgur, but 24/50 pages in good quality was already like 120MB, and imgur only allows 20MB uploads. Smaller files would have meant very pixelated pages. I hope this is ok. Tell me if you have a smart solution to this...

Anyways, I look forward to the feedback. Don't feel the need to stress, I'm used to waiting for stuff from uni. Take all the time you need.

Best wishes!

Thilo

Hey there, I'll be handling your critique.

Unfortunately your link would require us to download it so I'll be asking for an alternative.

Google photos or google drive is an alternative or you can use imgur. The 20mb limit for imgur is per image and any image larger than that will get scaled back and converted to a jpeg.

You should be able to make an album and just upload all the pages to it.

Let me know if for some reason those don't work, if it does work than just reply to this with a new link and I'll handle your critique as soon as I can.

I look forward to seeing your work.

Next Steps:

Need a different link please.

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

Here it is as an imgur album.

May I ask why you can't download things?

While I'll be leaving the critique to Tofu (which he'll get to in a day or two), I can answer your question.

I do not permit my TAs to download files as it is a risk to them. Someone could ostensibly sign up for official critique just to have a TA download something potentially harmful. It's an unnecessary risk.

That makes sense, I guess I kinda forgot that pretty much anyone can sign up here and send you things..

This works, thanks.

As Uncomfortable mentioned it's a safety thing, as well as the fact that downloading takes time and some of us already work nearly everyday and any time we can save is appreciated.

Congratulations on completing the box challenge, it's definitely a lot more work than most people expect. Not only does it help deepen your understanding of important concepts but it shows your desire to learn as well. Be proud of what you've accomplished and that desire you've shown. That being said I'll try to keep this critique fairly brief so you can get working on the next steps as soon as possible.

Things you did well:

  • You're doing a good job of drawing the lines constructing your boxes smoothly and confidently.

  • You're doing a great job of experimenting with orientations, and rates of foreshortening. Experimenting is an important habit to build when learning any new skill, it helps form a more well rounded understanding. I hope you'll continue to display and nurture this habit in the future.

Things you can work on:

  • They're not a requirement of the challenge but I recommend practicing applying hatching and line weight in your future work. They're useful tools to learn and the only way to improve is to practice.

  • I'd like you to experiment with proportions more in the future as well. Currently you tend to draw your boxes like cubes which is fine but mixing in some longer/thinner/wider boxes will show you how your lines behave in different scenarios, remember that experimenting is important.

  • There are times when your lines converge in pairs or you attempt to keep your lines a bit too parallel which results in them diverging. This is an example of lines converging in pairs, and this shows the relation between each line in a set and their respective vanishing point. The inner pair of lines will be quite similar unless the box gets quite long and the outer pair can vary a lot depending on the location of the vanishing point. Move it further away and the lines become closer to parallel while moving it closer increases the rate of foreshortening.

The key things we want to remember from this exercise are that our lines should always converge as a set not in pairs, never diverge from the vanishing point and due to perspective they won't be completely parallel.

Overall while you did make a few mistakes your boxes are improving so far and with more mileage you'll continue to become more consistent. That being said I'll be marking your submission as complete and move you on to lesson 2.

Keep practicing previous exercises and boxes as warm ups, and good luck.

Next Steps:

Move on to lesson 2.

This critique marks this lesson as complete.

Thanks for the feedback! ?

The recommendation below is an advertisement. Most of the links here are part of Amazon's affiliate program (unless otherwise stated), which helps support this website. It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Staedtler Pigment Liners

Staedtler Pigment Liners

These are what I use when doing these exercises. They usually run somewhere in the middle of the price/quality range, and are often sold in sets of different line weights - remember that for the Drawabox lessons, we only really use the 0.5s, so try and find sets that sell only one size.

Alternatively, if at all possible, going to an art supply store and buying the pens in person is often better because they'll generally sell them individually and allow you to test them out before you buy (to weed out any duds).
