Hello!

I have been trying to draw animals in different positions, as well as practicing using various shapes.

I would really appreciate a review.

Animals in order of creation:

  • Bird

  • Fox

  • Oryx

  • Badger

  • Rhinoceros

  • Barreleye Fish

  • Whale Shark

  • Hybrids (Oryx/Badger & Barreleye Fish/Rhinoceros)

Hello! Since umbr didn't answer I'll take over the crit, in the future if something like this happens you can just ping me on the discord and I'll take over it, so you don't have to wait that much time. About your last revision I think you made good progress with the forms.

The main thingy I still see is that some of them are off balance and look like they would fall off, always try to imagine them in their last position, think of them like water baloons, and imagine if they fell over the other sausages until they get stable. Here's a few corrections . Some of the contour curves felt a bit flat as well, so always try to remember the complete ellipse in perspective when drawing them if you aren't already, it helps.

About the animal drawings I more or less agree with what umbr said, overall you've done a good approach and they look solid in general. On some drawings you're doing well with the sausage method, like on the wolves, but on others like on the bears you make some mistakes, like not drawing through all the sausages, or not drawing intersections between forms. Whenever you approach legs, and other similar forms on drawabox you need to use simple organic forms, like on the organic intersections exercise, and they need to adhere to the forms explained in lesson 2. Here's the explanation.

Here are some of the issues explained on your work , given that please do one more deer to check if you got them right and then you're set for lesson 6, good luck and great job! Keep it up!

Next Steps:

1 more deer

I thank you both very much for helping me with the reviews!

This time I drew through all the shapes, even the ones on the back.

The ends of my sausages are still somewhat elliptical, due to the hook in my hand when tracing them. I'm trying to improve on that.

I'm still working on subtleties like line weight or intersections of shapes.

First of all sorry for the late answer! I got sick so couldn't write critiques for a few days. Now into the critique:

That's better! Only thing now is that whenever you're adding additional forms you're doing it a bit different from how it's explained on the lessons. Here's an example on one of the demos of the website.

And here's an example on your work. Try to always add additional forms as simple as you can, and if you need to add a lot of bulges to your drawing do several of them like i did instead of making a big one.

Overall like I said you did a good job so I'll mark this as complete. Ask any questions if you have them and move on to the cylinder challenge, keep it up!

Next Steps:

250 cylinder challenge

Hi! I'll be critiquing your work today.

Organic intersections - These look good for the most part, though there are some key flaws, since in some areas it looks like: you forgot to establish any contour lines on the form (making them seem somewhat flat) or drew them in a confusing way (see the bottom-left form on the first page); you didn't finish drawing the outline of the form (see the top-right form on the first page); or your shadows didn't properly follow the contour of the form it was falling on (see page 2) or contradicted each other in general, making it confusing as to what it is in front of each other. Overall quite good, but these small mistakes do detract from it.

Birds - These both look quite good, and the forms feel very solid and 3D, though the wing on the first bird might be a bit small (I'm not sure though since I don't have the original reference image). Overall, great job!

Foxes - First fox: looks great. It was a very smart idea to establish the perspective with the plane at the bottom before drawing. When adding additional forms, I'd suggest drawing them as one, continuous form, instead of the individual blobs you drew on the fox's back. Second fox: The form feels quite solid, but the bottom region is quite confusing with all of the overlapping lines. I'd suggest adding line weight and shadow to certain areas to make them more distinct and readable.

Oryx - Looks good, very solid form. The rocks in the background of the second one feel kind of like they're floating, so I'd suggest adding another straight line (higher up then the one you've already established) so that it's clear that they're on the ground.

Bears - In terms of form these are okay - though the bear does appear a bit too sausage-like in shape and a bit unstable. In terms of proportions I feel that these are lacking a bit (however proportions and accuracy aren't really the focus of this exercise, so this doesn't matter). In general I would suggest adding some more contour lines to your forms, as this can help to give them greater solidity.

Rhinoceroses - The thigh sizes on the first rhino seem a bit too small, however I can't say this for certain since (again) I don't have the original reference images for these. Overall, okay.

Barreleye Fish and Whale Shark - The smooth gestural lines (which didn't have as much time to shine in your previous drawings due to their other issues) give these drawings a great effect. Both drawings feel very solid and confident, and it's clear what's happening in the image. These look great!

Hybrid (if i'm not mistaken, this is the last image) - feels very solid, good implementation of different animal features.

Overall, quite good understanding of form and structure (though with a couple of issues did crop up). I'd suggest redoing the Organic Intersections exercise, implementing my critiques as you do so.

Next Steps:

Please redo the Organic Intersections exercise.

Hi, thanks for the review!

Quite accurate and clear. I think it will take me some time to correct the things mentioned.

I have tried to simplify my shapes and shadows in correcting the assignment. Here it is for you to proofread when you have time.

Hi! Sorry for replying so late (I haven't looked at my Drawabox account for a while).

Anyway, these look great. These definitely feel clearer and more solid, though the two on the top left (with one sausage lying on top of another) looks a bit strange. I think you might not have followed the contour of the form underneath, so it looks a bit flat. But besides that, it's looking good.

I'll mark this as complete now.

I understand, I'll keep practicing these for a while.

Thanks for replying!

The Art of Brom

The Art of Brom

Here we're getting into the subjective - Gerald Brom is one of my favourite artists (and a pretty fantastic novelist!). That said, if I recommended art books just for the beautiful images contained therein, my list of recommendations would be miles long.

The reason this book is close to my heart is because of its introduction, where Brom goes explains in detail just how he went from being an army brat to one of the most highly respected dark fantasy artists in the world today. I believe that one's work is flavoured by their life's experiences, and discovering the roots from which other artists hail can help give one perspective on their own beginnings, and perhaps their eventual destination as well.
