hello

congrats on finishing the 250 boxes challenge. i'll be handeling the critique for your hw submission.

starting with the positives -

  • you seem to be properly using the ghosting method for each of your lines so that's great.

  • the hatching lines are placed neatly and with patience so well done on that too.

  • also, i like that you're making an attempt to add line weight from the very beginning of the challege.

  • and you have a good understanding for the line extention method. so good job on keeping them away from the viewer.

some things that stand out to me is that-

  • you're drawing over some of the lines. if a line turns out off then leave it and move on to the next one. if you try to fix lines it only makes things messier.

  • whild line weight isn't a necessary requirement in this challenge it's good seeing you attempting it as i mentioned. however, we need to be more careful of how we're placing line weight and only add it in certain places vatying the same thinness/ thickness and not on all four sides of the box. this diagram shows an example for this.

  • in some cases the lines if the boxes are congerving in pairs in stead of the same vanishing point. there are a few instances of some divergences too. so i recommend checking this out here.

  • most of your boxes have dramatic foreshortening (vp on the page) instead of boxes with shallow foreshortening (lines almost parallel and vp outside of the page).

  • one more thing i'd point out is that you have similar orientations for how you're drawing most of the boxes. you can refer to this example here for how boxes rotate in different orientations.

overall, you seem to understand most of the concepts for how to draw a box. you will be overcoming the few issues that you have in the future. so keep practicing boxes along side the contents of previous lesson as part of the warm up.

that being said, i'd mark this as complete and say you may move on to lesson 2.

Next Steps:

move over to lesson 2

Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
