Hello! This is my first pass through lesson 1. I am very new to drawing and have enjoyed going through this first lesson because I could see improvements each day. I included some of my warmups, so whoever takes the time to critique this can see some of my progress.

Some notes on how I feel I did personally...

I personally struggled the most with ellipses at the start (especially inside the planes) (but got a little better with practice) as well as the rough perspective and rotated boxes. I also feel like I didn't mix in enough different rotations in the organic perspective as well (and kind of rushed it admittedly). My brain just kind of had a hard time seeing the 3d shape at times with the boxes exercises so it was hard for me to make those educated guesses on where best to place lines at times. However, it started to make more sense to me visually towards the end of each exercise, so hopefully repeating that will help me with that piece.

I apologize for using photobucket (it put the photos in a strange order), I was having some weird issues uploading to imgur. I will try again next time I submit for critique since it seems like that is more convenient. Let me know if there is any troubles viewing this album and I'll try to get it reuploaded.

Thanks so much in advance to anyone who provides me with feedback, I look forward to implementing your advice into correcting my practice and improving!

Hey!

Your superimposed lines look mostly good. I see that some flair out at the starting point. This probably means that you rushed some of them. I suggest taking some more time to position your pen correctly and you'll be good. Also some of the ghosted lines have a slight arch. There are two reasons for this, that I can think of. Firstly you might be forgetting to draw from the shoulder. Secondly, it could be that you have predisposition to arch your lines. This could be fixed by trying to arch the line i opposite direction then you are used to.

Ellipses in planes are a bit shaky. For now focus on making them smooth and accuracy will come later. Also in the table of ellipses exercise most are floating around. They should fit in smugly within the edges of the table. Maybe focus more on this exercise when doing warm ups.

Now let's go on to the boxes. Here I noticed you repeat some of your lines. In this course you should avoid it. This will teach you to make peace with mistakes and the form will appear more stable. It's okay if a line didn't come out accurately, this will improve as you practice. In rough perspective and rotated boxes exercises there are issues with construction, but it's okay since these exercises are meant to be difficult. This will improve as you move on to 250 boxes challenge.

Good luck!

I agree with greenteaaddiction and also some of your ellipses you didn't got over them 2 or 3. For those your suppose to go over them at least 2 times. You did pretty good over all. Keep up the good work!

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
