Completed Lesson 2! Started it last week of Nov 2021 & finished it today(Jan 2022).

I had lots of trouble in textures, analysis got me stuck on it's exercise for way too long & wasn't able to figure out how to do hair & stuff in dissections.

Any help & critique to improve my work is welcome.

Hello I'll be taking a look at your lesson 2 homework

-Starting with the arrows section you are doing an excellent job, they are very confidently drawn which helps to capture the fluidity with which they move through space, you have decreased the negative space between the zigzagging sections of the ribbon. I only have one minor observation, the ribbon should get wider as it moves closer to the viewer and not the other way around. it is a subtle point but you want to avoid these inconsistencies to maintain the illusion of 3D

-Moving on to the organic forms with contours, your sausages are turning out well, but keep aiming to have their ends equally sized.

  • You are aware of your mistakes on the ellipses, they are well drawn but I think you need more time to ghost your ellipses to get comfortable with the motion, and to think about the degree shifts and the alignment.

  • Your contour curves have some problems, first I think you are still a little hesitant to draw them, so make sure you keep prioritizing confidence, you will get them to hook around the sausage form with more mileage, But the most important point that I want to stress is that they are more or less consistent in their degrees, one thing that can help you both in the ellipses and curves is to try to use less contours, a few well placed marks will do a better job than many hesitant and wobbly marks.

-In the texture analysis I can see that you are focusing on the cast shadows and ignoring the outlines as they should be, keep aiming to make the transition from dense to sparse more subtle, overall this is a good attempt and you are getting acquainted with the notion of texture.

-In the dissections exercise I can see that you are doing your textures with lines so I wanted to quickly redirect you to this image which shows that when we're working with thin line like textures if we outline and fill the shadow we will create a much more dynamic texture than simply drawing lines. Overall you are doing good, always keep in mind that you should be looking at your reference constantly.

-You are doing great on the form intersections, I can see that you are clearly pushing yourself to think in 3D, your forms share a sense of solidity and belonging to the same space, keep practicing and doing this exercise in your warm ups to improve your spatial reasoning.

-Finishing with the organic intersections, you're keeping your forms simple and easy to work with which is a good strategy to help produce good results. When drawing your shadows you don't push them far enough to cast, instead they mostly hug the form creating them, try pushing them further. It appears like your shadows aren't following a consistent light source, I recommend pushing your light source to the top left or right corner of the page to start with, it's easier than working with a light directly above your form pile.

Next Steps:

Overall you have done a great job, while there may be a few things that you need to work on I'm sure you will improve with practice. Move on to lesson 3

The Art of Blizzard Entertainment

While I have a massive library of non-instructional art books I've collected over the years, there's only a handful that are actually important to me. This is one of them - so much so that I jammed my copy into my overstuffed backpack when flying back from my parents' house just so I could have it at my apartment. My back's been sore for a week.

The reason I hold this book in such high esteem is because of how it puts the relatively new field of game art into perspective, showing how concept art really just started off as crude sketches intended to communicate ideas to storytellers, designers and 3D modelers. How all of this focus on beautiful illustrations is really secondary to the core of a concept artist's job. A real eye-opener.
