Pangolin Implicit Texture

I've been struggling with the concept of implicit texture. I understand you need to focus on the cast shadows (the shadow casting onto another object rather than the side of the form not receiving light.) But, I Iooked at the example homework for the dissections to better understand pangolin scales because whenever I draw the cast shadows it does not seem implicate they are scales at all. In the reference I used, the scales produce cast shadows behind it but not all around it. There were gaps on some parts of the scales where they were not casting a shadow nor had a shadow casting on it.
Looking at the example homework, https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/dissections/example I can't understand how it is not explicit in terms of the outlines. Because each scale is detailed with shadows all around it to show the shape of the scale as if the outline of the scale was drawn rather than just the cast shadows. Is it more detailed in the example because the reference was in a position towards the light where each scale was casting a shadow or being casted on all around it?
