Hey community. It's chiran and I've completed 250 box challenge. after page no 28 ( 140-145 boxes) the indication of page number has been misaligned but there is continuity in boxes. I hope its not a problem. I apologize for constructing boxes closely together which caused some pages to look messier.

Thank you so much in advance for taking time in critiquing my work.

I seems you have nailed the concept of drawing boxes in perspective, the convergences on the later boxes is very good. as for 248 the problem I think is the point in the top right of it and that i think it should be more foreshortened to connect with the other ones. other than that your good. can I ask for a critique of my own for the same challenge?

Move onto lesson 2

Hey! Thank you so much. yes you are absolutely right. Thanks for catching that. regarding your question, I just went over submission you got some pretty decent work there but I'm not sure how to approach 250 box challenge critique ( what to focus and what not to). so its definitely worth to wait for someone more skilled to critique your work.

I really appreciate your time and effort, thank you soo much. have a nice day!

Giving critiques can be quite difficult when you're new to it - in order to ensure that you're providing the student with a solid breakdown of their work and helpful analysis, I'd recommend using the informal checklists by one of our TAs, Elodin. you'll find the one for the box challenge here: https://pastebin.com/dbjR9MFj

If you need your own work reviewed, you should not be soliciting it from others you're critiquing. Instead, you can take a look at the #critique-exchange channel on our discord server. There's a whole system they use where students can get their work added to a queue. You'll find the discord server here: https://discord.gg/FtSS4hhqSu

Hello Chiran,

Congrats on completing the challenge! It's very intimidating due to the sheer amount of boxes that must be drawn, but you pushed through and completed it, which shows your desire to learn as well as your perseverance, be proud of what you have achieved.

Today I'll be reviewing some of your work, I hope that my advice is helpful to you in future attempts and aids you in your Drawabox journey.

Lines

Let's start with your linework, you have done a great job at keeping it clean, smooth, straight and confident. It's good to see you attempt to apply lineweight around the silhouette of your box, although it does occasionally, don't worry too much about this however as this will improve with time, just remember to keep practicing it during your warm ups!

You have extended your correction lines in the right direction and you're doing well by using the ghosting method to help with planning your box.

Box Construction

You have done a good job by experimenting with proportions, sizes and rotations for your boxes.

You did focus much more on shallow perspective than extreme foreshortening, it would have been nice to see you try to reach a better balance on the perspective of your boxes.

I ask that in the future if possible you please replace the gray looking extension lines for bolder colors. Even cheap ballpoint pens or colored pencils will do. As it stands now it's pretty difficult to see them in some of your pages.

There is a lot of improvement from your first boxes to your last ones, but quite often your lines are still converging in pairs.

This happens for a few reasons, but regardless of what they might be we can try to improve upon this mistake by keeping in mind that all of our lines should converge as a set, and that inner lines will usually be very similar unless the box is quite long.

We can also try to distribute the minor errors we commit by changing the order in which we draw boxes ( if you haven't already), by drawing our inner corners right after finishing one outer one, we can distribute better the mistakes we've made and draw a more forgiving looking box.

Final Thoughts

Overall I think this was a solid submission. You seem to have understood the concepts explained and I believe you are ready to move forwards, don't forget to add boxes to your warm up list.

I'll be marking this challenge as complete, good luck with lesson 2!

PureRef

PureRef

This is another one of those things that aren't sold through Amazon, so I don't get a commission on it - but it's just too good to leave out. PureRef is a fantastic piece of software that is both Windows and Mac compatible. It's used for collecting reference and compiling them into a moodboard. You can move them around freely, have them automatically arranged, zoom in/out and even scale/flip/rotate images as you please. If needed, you can also add little text notes.

When starting on a project, I'll often open it up and start dragging reference images off the internet onto the board. When I'm done, I'll save out a '.pur' file, which embeds all the images. They can get pretty big, but are way more convenient than hauling around folders full of separate images.

Did I mention you can get it for free? The developer allows you to pay whatever amount you want for it. They recommend $5, but they'll allow you to take it for nothing. Really though, with software this versatile and polished, you really should throw them a few bucks if you pick it up. It's more than worth it.
