Hi! i'll be the one critiquing you for today

now i checked onto your submissions and it seemed like you haven't gotten a critique yet onto your 250 box-challenge, now going to the community route is free but you aren't expected to get a critique but it would still be best if you try to wait for a critique before moving on to another lesson since you would miss out on some points and you wouldn't really benefit much if you work on a cave/ hole, so to get a critique faster you can go ahead and join discord here https://discord.com/invite/FtSS4hhqSu and check out the channel called #critique-exchange so that me and other helpful community members could offer insight to either your critique or your work

starting off with your arrows you did great establishing the flow of your arrows as well as overlapping them but the other arrows feel a bit confusing as you either shaded the wrong part or you didn't apply line-weight to determine which is in front or at the back, more on that here https://drawabox.com/lesson/2/4/step4. i also noticed that there are times where your arrows pinch or swell arbitrarily, and that's a completely normal mistake that most students do so you'll be consistent at it when you've gained mileage doing it on your warm-ups, but the way you shaded/ hatched lines onto your arrows, i need to point that out, since it felt as if they were rushed or done sloppily and they feel like they're floating or not resting in the curves of your arrows and unevenly spaced, think of it as extra mileage when doing hatching lines and please don't rush them.

now onto your sausages you actually kept the degree change for the ellipses/ contour lines which is good, since it'll greatly benefit you on l3 and above but here are some issues:

  • you aren't keeping your sausages simple - as far as i see you're sausages are way too complex as some are pinching or swelling, one way to avoid this mistake is by ghosting your sausage before establishing your flow line but it's up to you whether or not you ghost it or not, although i get that it is your first time so i'd like you to keep this in mind on your warm-ups

  • you've only sticked on to one orientation: believe it or not there's more than 1 orientation of a sausage and this image here would show you the 2 other orientations for it, i get that this wasn't shown in this page but i'd love if you also try this onto your warm-ups

now onto your textures it's a bit hard to tell whether or not you're focusing too much on outline or cast shadow since you didn't provide any references but i'll try my best to give a critique for it.

  • starting off with your texture analysis, you seem to leave some white spots/ white negative spaces in some of your texture, it might be because you're working only with your pen and you don't have a marker/ brush pen with you but try your best to fill it in with your pure black and no spots showing in your work. on the first texture's third panel the transition from dense to sparse is a bit hard to tell, on your second texture's third panel the transition from dense to sparse is well done but you can still do much more, on the third panel it got a bit better but you could make the left side much more denser since the black bar is still somewhat visible, anyways the work that you did was a great attempt, there's still more that you can do but that's what you can do for now. you can also start the 25 texture challenge right now but please don't complete it in one go, the challenge encourages us to do it while we do the course.

  • i don't see your dissections anywhere could you have perhaps not done it?(if so please do it even if it's very tedious :| but it's something that would actually be beneficial to you as it would challenge your patience.) or did you forget to put it in your imgur link if so please reply me the imgur link of your dissections exercise

now onto your form intersections

  • you are missing 1 page of boxes-only in your intersections so please submit that also

  • onto your 2nd- 4th pages, it's totally normal if you don't get it at first so if you still don't understand how to intersect forms don't beat yourself too hard, i would direct you to this resource here made by a active community member named optimus here: https://m.imgur.com/a/6Inx5Bz as it's very useful, you can also use any 3d software like blender or 3d paint so that you have an idea on how forms intersect, but on the fourth page it seems that you are slowly getting it.

lastly onto your organic intersections

  • on your first page it looks like your sausages are just floating and not resting on top of the forms, but on your 2nd page you've done a much better job but it seems like your cast shadow is a bit contradicting to your forms, it might be because you applied the cast shadow first before the forms which made it tricky.

anyways this was a solid submission, there's still room for improvement but i won't be letting you go yet, please submit 1 page of boxes-only intersection and 2 pages of the dissections exercise.

Next Steps:

1 page of boxes-only form intersection

2 pages of the dissections exercise

When finished, reply to this critique with your revisions.

hello, thank you so much for your critique, i will take notes for what you told me, i really got some problems with the textures and inking them, that is true.

could you please teach me how to warm up? it is really important for me

an also here is the lost images, i dont know what happened, https://imgur.com/a/rStpWfF

any suggestion on what to do next is really appreciated.

Hi, i'm glad that you were still able to reply with this critique.

so basically doing warmusp is choosing any exercises that you think you need to invest more time into but you should be taking no more than 15 mins when doing your warm-ups

feel free to refer to this as a guide

if you are suffering from the degree change do the following exercises:

choose either one of the three or all if you'd want

(if you already finished the lesson 3 branch exercise): branches exercise

sausage with contour ellipses

funnels exercise

if you are suffering with applying lineweight choose one or all of the following exercises:

superimposed lines/curves/waves(Highly recommended)

Arrows

Boxes Exercise

If you are a bit suffering from accuracy you can choose one of these exercises:

Boxes Excercise

ghosted planes w/ ellipses or ghosted lines exercise

sausage with contour lines

form intersections

and i would recommend to just choose 1 for each section that you'd like so that you wont grind just one section in your whole 15 min break and remember to prioritize confidence over accuracy first.

now onto your critique, i'll be referring everything in your box intersections here: https://imgur.com/a/Vg5Sx0R

firstly on your box intersection on the left side you did suprisingly well although i could've wished that you drew more boxes, one concern that i have is that you didn't drew through your box as you can see the box that has the yellow circle on. on the right side of your page you seem to be repeating your lines which caused me some confusion also try to avoid repeating your line as it is a bad habit and it would either hide your mistake or make it much more visible, so if you drew a line and it came off wrong, try to work with it. the one with the green circle, my only concern on it is that it seems to have 2 intersections, i'll assume that you didn't like the first intersection which is the blue line that i outlined on and you resorted to the purple intersection which you then apply lineweight, now it's mostly because you either went automatic mode and didn't think it through or you assumed that it looks nice but then after applying it, it somehow loosk weirder, nevertheless it will be best if you try to work with your mistake and not fix it mainly in this course.

For the dissections exercise, great work with pulling it through, it might have taken you several hours/ day/ weeks, but i'll tell the issue you seem to be outlining most of your texture which then results to this symbolic drawing like the wheat that you did another issue is that the transition from dense to sparse feels there's no transition at all except for the dirt texture and scale texture, for the grass texture it feels as if you relied with arbitrary marks which shouldn't be the case as you are also supposed to work with your reference, but to summarize, don't outline everything just think of it as black filled in shapes to represent the shadows, don't try to outline the curvature of it or the edge just focus on the shadows, and focus on implicit rather than explicit. don't rely too much on randomness or chaos. and lastly try to find patterns or as much as possible follow the 90/10 rule which is 90% observation 10% drawing.

but anyhow i'll mark this as complete, although there is still a lot to be improved upon i feel like you're ready for lesson 3, just keep in mind the points that i made for when you'll apply texture, good luck on your journey

Next Steps:

Move on-to Lesson 3

This community member feels the lesson should be marked as complete, and 2 others agree. The student has earned their completion badge for this lesson and should feel confident in moving onto the next lesson.

It's also more than that - it's a hand-picked recommendation of something I've used myself. If you're interested, here is a full list.
Sakura Pigma Microns

Sakura Pigma Microns

A lot of my students use these. The last time I used them was when I was in high school, and at the time I felt that they dried out pretty quickly, though I may have simply been mishandling them. As with all pens, make sure you're capping them when they're not in use, and try not to apply too much pressure. You really only need to be touching the page, not mashing your pen into it.

In terms of line weight, the sizes are pretty weird. 08 corresponds to 0.5mm, which is what I recommend for the drawabox lessons, whereas 05 corresponds to 0.45mm, which is pretty close and can also be used.
